TO EDUCATE, ORGANIZE AND ADVOCATE IN DEFENSE OF MISSOURI'S PEOPLE AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT.
FOOD AND FARM- CONVENING AND COORDINATING THE ST. LOUIS FOOD POLICY COALITION TO BUILD A THRIVING, LOCAL FOOD SYSTEM THAT PROVIDES HEALTHY, LOCALLY GROWN FOOD TO PROMOTE ENVIRONMENTAL AND PUBLIC HEALTH; AND ADVOCATING FOR POLICIES THAT PROMOTE URBAN AGRICULTURE OPPOTUNITIES, ORGANIC AND SUSTAINABLE FARMING PRACTICES, AND SMALL-SCALE FARMING THAT PROTECTS LAND, WATER, AND AIR RESOURCES.
WATER PROGRAM- PRIORITIES INCLUDE: IMPROVING WATER QUALITY, PROTECTING AND RESTORING WETLANDS, REDUCING NUTRIENT POLLUTION INTO OUR RIVERS AND STREAMS, AND PROMOTING RESTORATION EFFORTS ON THE MISSISSIPPI AND MISSOURI RIVERS. ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: PROTECTING ALL WATERS OF THE U.S. IN MISSOURI WITH SCIENTIFIC WATER QUALITY STANDARDS AS REQUIRED BY THE CLEAN WATER ACT THROUGH WORK ON STATE TECHNICAL COMMITTEES, LITIGATION, AND PUBLIC EDUCATION AND OUTREACH; RESTORING WETLANDS BY MONITORING AND ENFORCING WETLAND MITIGATION EFFORTS; PARTICIPATING IN STATE WORK GROUPS TO ADDRESS AGRICULTURAL POLLUTION INTO RIVERS AND STREAMS; PROMOTING IMPROVED NUTRIENT AND PHOSPHOROUS MANAGEMENT ON MISSOURI FARMS TO PREVENT WATER POLLUTION; WATERSHED PLANNING AND OUTREACH EFFORTS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT POINT AND NON-POINT SOURCES OF POLLUTION INTO URBAN WATERSHEDS; EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ABOUT POLICIES AFFECTING FOOD SUPPLY AND FOOD QUALITY, INCLUDING AS THEY RELATE TO AGRICULTURAL RUNOFF; COLLABORATING WITH PARTNERS IN THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER BASIN TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE USES FOR THE RIVER;CONVENING THE LOWER MISSOURI RIVER COALITION;MONITOR AND EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE THREATS TO OUR FLOODPLAINS AND WETLANDS, AND ADVOCATE FOR PRESERVATION OF THESE ENVIRONMENTALLY SIGNIFICANT AREAS; PROMOTING THE PRESERVATION AND SOUND MANAGEMENT OF THE OZARK NATIONAL SCENIC RIVERWAYS AND ITS OUTSTANDING RESOURCE WATERS, THE CURRENT AND JACKS FORK RIVERS BY RESEARCHING AND DOCUMENTING CONDITIONS AT THE RIVERWAYS AND ENGAGING MEMBERS IN THE DEVELOPMENT, ADOPTION, AND ENFORCEMENT OF THE PARK'S GENERAL MANAGEMENT PLAN; ADVOCATING FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE ST. JOHN'S BAYOU/NEW MADRID FLOOD WAY AND AGAINST RIVER MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES TO SEPARATE THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER FROM ITS FLOODPLAIN IN MISSOURI. FOOD AND FARM PROGRAM- PRIORITIES INCLUDE: CONVENING THE ST. LOUIS FOOD POLICY COALITION, A DIVERSE GROUP OF STAKEHOLDERS TO PROMOTE A THRIVING LOCAL FOOD SYSTEM THAT SUPPORTS THE HEALTH, COMMUNITY, ENVIRONMENT, AND ECONOMY OF THE GREATER ST. LOUIS AREA BY FOCUSING ON URBAN AGRICULTURE POLICY, FOOD ACCESS AND PUBLIC TRANSIT ACCESS, FOOD HUB INFRASTRUCTURE, AND INSTITUTIONAL FOOD PURCHASING; ADVOCATING FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE PRACTICES AND CONSERVATION PRACTICES STATEWIDE; AND RAISING AWARENESS OF THE HARMS OF INDUSTRIAL AGRICULTURE PRACTICES. OTHER PROJECTS INCLUDE: ADVOCATING FOR THE CLEAN UP OF THE WEST LAKE LANDFILL SITE; WATCHDOGGING THE CALLAWAY NUCLEAR SITE; AND PROMOTING RENEWABLE ENERGY POLICIES.
