THE STARKLOFF CAREER ACADEMY: THE ACADEMY PREPARES JOB SEEKERS WITH DISABILITIES FOR COMPETITION IN THE MARKETPLACE. INSTRUCTIONAL OPTIONS ARM CANDIDATES WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART JOB-SEARCH TOOLS AND GIVE THEM THE CONFIDENCE THEY NEED TO ADDRESS ISSUES SPECIFIC TO DISABILITY. THE OPTIONS THAT DEFINE THE ACADEMY INCLUDE: CAPSTONE COURSE: OUR TEN-WEEK COURSE FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH COLLEGE DEGREES OR TECHNICAL CERTIFICATIONS HAS A RECORD FOR SUCCESS. SINCE 2012, 85 PERCENT OF THOSE WHO COMPLETED THE COURSE HAVE ADVANCED ON THEIR CAREER PATHS. THE PARTICIPATION OF MANY PARTNERS ALLOWS US TO OFFER ONE OF THE BEST JOB-PREPARATION CLASSES AVAILABLE ANYWHERE. HR PROFESSIONALS, FROM COMPANIES LIKE NESTLE PURINA, CENTENE, ENTERPRISE HOLDINGS, BOEING AND WELLS FARGO ADVISORS, TEACH STUDENTS ABOUT APPLICATIONS, RESUMES, AND INTERVIEWS. OUR PARTICIPANTS LEARN DIRECTLY FROM THE PEOPLE WHO HIRE. OTHER PROFESSIONALS TALK ABOUT ISSUES SPECIFIC TO DISABILITY LIKE LAWS RELATED TO DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT, ACCOMMODATIONS, AND STRATEGIES FOR DISABILITY DISCLOSURE. THE CAREER ACADEMY PROVIDES MATERIALS, INCLUDING OUR WORKBOOK AND YOUTUBE TRAINING VIDEOS, TO PARTICIPANTSINDIVIDUAL CAREER COUNSELING: INTENSIVE COUNSELING IS ALSO AVAILABLE TO PREPARE CANDIDATES TO MAKE CAREER DECISIONS AND PUT THEIR BEST FOOT FORWARD IN THE JOB SEARCH PROCESS. CAREER CONNECTORS: A FLEDGLING COMPONENT OF THE ACADEMY, THIS PROGRAM WILL MATCH JOB CANDIDATES WITH DISABILITIES WITH PROFESSIONALS WHO CAN HELP THEM INCREASE THEIR NETWORKS. SINCE EIGHT OUT OF TEN JOBS ARE FOUND THROUGH WORD-OF-MOUTH OR PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS, NETWORKING IS CRITICAL. PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES FACE MANY CHALLENGES IN NETWORKING, AND PROFESSIONAL CONNECTORS IS DESIGNED TO HELP THEM BREAK DOWN BARRIERS.DREAM BIG: DESIGNED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SPECIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT, DREAM BIG HELPS COLLEGE-BOUND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS EMBRACE THEIR DISABILITIES AND GAIN CONFIDENCE AS THEY LOOK TO ADD THEIR TALENTS TO THE WORKFORCE. IT IS CENTERED ON CAREER CAMPS THAT PROVIDE FIELD TRIPS TO CORPORATIONS WHERE STUDENTS FIND A WELCOME AND EXPLORE CAREER OPTIONS. ACCESS U: DESIGNED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES, ACCESS U HELP THEM GET THE MOST FROM THEIR COLLEGE EXPERIENCES AS THEY PREPARE FOR EMPLOYMENT SUCCESS. ASSESSMENT REVEALED SIGNIFICANT GAPS IN SERVICES FROM COLLEGES AND MAJOR IMPEDIMENTS TO SUCCESS ON SEVERAL FRONTS, INCLUDING PHYSICAL, ACADEMIC, AND SOCIAL BARRIERS. STARKLOFF IS GEARING UP TO APPLY OUR KNOWLEDGE AND OUR RESOURCES TO BRINGING DOWN THESE BARRIERS IN 2019.THE DISABILITY STUDIES INITIATIVE: STARKLOFF'S DISABILITY STUDIES PROGRAM HAS BEEN A PART OF THE REHABILITATION SERVICES CURRICULUM AT MARYVILLE UNIVERSITY FOR 14 YEARS. THOSE WHO ENROLL ARE EXPOSED TO OUR VIEW OF DISABILITY AS A FACT TO BE RECOGNIZED AND NOT A PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED. OVER THE YEARS, SEVERAL HUNDRED STUDENTS HAVE TAKEN OUR MESSAGE INTO EMPLOYMENT SETTINGS, RANGING FROM NURSING, TO OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY, TO SOCIAL WORK. MANY HAVE DONE INTERNSHIPS WITH US AS WELL.
THE UNIVERSAL DESIGN SUMMIT: BEGINNING IN 2002, STARKLOFF COLLABORATED WITH R. L. MACE UNIVERSAL DESIGN INSTITUTE TO PROVIDE BIENNIAL CONFERENCES THAT SHOWCASE BEST PRACTICES IN UNIVERSAL DESIGN. IN NOVEMBER 2017, WE SERVED AS SOLE PRESENTERS OF UDS 6 WHICH ATTRACTED 150 ARCHITECTS, DESIGNERS, AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS. THOSE IN ATTENDANCE LEARNED ABOUT PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN THAT ARE GROUNDED IN EMPATHY AND COMMUNITY.COLLEEN STARKLOFF TALKS DISABILITY: COLLEEN STARKLOFF, WITH OVER 40 YEARS' EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD OF DISABILITY, IS A THOUGHT LEADER ON SUBJECTS RANGING FROM EMPLOYMENT, TO DISABILITY RIGHTS, TO DISABILITY HISTORY, TO UNIVERSAL DESIGN. SHE HAS TRAINED THOUSANDS TO WELCOME PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES INTO ALL ASPECTS OF SOCIETY. STARKLOFF PROMOTES COLLEEN AS A SPEAKER AND AS A VOICE FOR DISABILITY, IN PERSON, IN PRINT-MEDIA AND ON-LINE.
