IN 2015, TRAILNET'S EDUCATION & ENCOURAGEMENT PROGRAMS HELPED MORE THAN 3,000 STUDENTS: LEARN WALKING AND BICYCLING SAFETY SKILLS AT IN-CLASSROOM BICYCLE SAFETY AND RIDING EDUCATION; TAUGHT AND ENCOURAGED TO SAFELY WALK TO SCHOOL; HELPED GRADUATE FROM TRAINING WHEELS; AND TRAINED TO PROMOTE WALKING TO SCHOOL AS WALK AMBASSADORS. IN 2015, ENCOURAGED 378 COMMUTERS TO BIKE TO WORK, KEEPING 439,007 POUNDS OF CO2 OUT OF THE ATMOSPHERE. TRAILNET'S NEIGHBORHOOD GREENWAYS ST. LOUIS PROJECT HAS BROUGHT TOGETHER INSTRUMENTAL PARTNERS TO CREATE A NETWORK OF NEIGHBORHOOD GREENWAYS IN THE CITY OF ST. LOUIS. NEIGHBORHOOD GREENWAYS ARE NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS TRANSFORMED TO HAVE A HIGH DEGREE OF SAFETY AND COMFORT, WHICH ENCOURAGES WALKING AND BIKING. IN 2015, WE TOOK CITY LEADERS TO PORTLAND, OREGON, WHERE THEY BIKED NEIGHBORHOOD GREENWAYS AND EXPERIENCED THEIR BENEFITS FIRST-HAND. THE TRIP STRENGTHENED BUY-IN FOR THE IDEA AND WHEN WE RETURNED, CITY STAFF AND ELECTED OFFICIALS MADE A COMMITMENT TO CREATE PILOT ROUTES.

TRAILNET HELD FOUR TRAFFIC CALMING DEMONSTRATIONS ON NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS TO SHOW RESIDENTS, OFFICIALS, AND CITY STAFF HOW STREETS CAN BE REDESIGNED TO REDUCE SPEEDING AND INCREASE SAFETY. IN 2015 TRAILNET FINALIZED A BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN MASTER PLAN FOR THE CITY OF DES PERES. KIRKWOOD FINISHED THE ENGINEERING AND DESIGN PHASE OF ITS BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN PLAN.TRAILNET COMPLETED 5 NEIGHBORHOOD WALK AUDITS WHICH HELPED REDUCE AVERAGE TRAFFIC SPEED BY 6.2 MPH AND THE RATE OF COMPLETE STOP SIGN STOPS AND AVERAGE OF 14.5 % DURING DEMONSTRATIONS. THIS WORK GAINED NATIONAL ATTENTION MORE THAN ONCE AND ITS SUCCESS WAS SHARED WITH U.S. CONGRESS.

WE PROVIDED 25 SCHOLARSHIPS TO REGIONAL LEADERS TO ATTEND THE INNOVATIVE ASSOCIATION OF PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLE PROFESSIONALS CONFERENCE. THROUGH EIGHT WALKING AND BIKING TOURS, WE HELPED PARTICIPANTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD FALL IN LOVE WITH ST. LOUIS.WE TOOK THIS GROUP TO SEE EXAMPLES OF BEST PRACTICE STREET DESIGN IN KANSAS CITY. THE TRIP BUILT RELATIONSHIPS AMONG THE GROUP AND INSPIRED LOCAL ALDERMAN DO A TRAFFIC CALMING DEMONSTRATION IN HIS WARD. TRAILNET TRAINED LEADERS AT FOUR REGIONAL PLANNING COMMISSIONS ON COMPLETE STREETS POLICIES AND DESIGNS. WE ALSO PROVIDED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO 8 COMMUNITIES STATEWIDE WORKING TO CREATE HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES WITH POLICY AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT STRATEGIES. TRAILNET SELECTED 12 ADVOCATES FOR ITS INAUGURAL WALK BIKE AMBASSADOR CLASS TO ASSIST WITH ITS ADVOCACY. THESE ADVOCATES ARE NOW EQUIPPED WITH THE SKILLS TO HELP TRAILNET WORK FOR SAFER STREETS IN THE REGION.
