EDUCATING THE PUBLIC AS TO THE POWER OF CHILDREN'S LITERATURE TO CREATE COVERSATION, CHANGE AND HOPE FOR A STRONGER, MORE EQUITABLE AND INCLUSIVE FUTURE FOR ALL.
ENROLLED FAMILIES RECEIVE CHILDREN'S BOOK SELECTIONS THAT ADDRESS RACE, RACISM AND DIFFERENCE; A PARENT CURRICULUM DELIVERED VIA A PASSWORD-PROTECTED WEBSITE THAT PROVIDES RESOURCES TO SUPPORT PARENT-CHILD INTERACTION AND ADULT LEARNING; ACCESS TO A SUPPORTIVE PEER-LEARNING COMMUNITY. WE ALSO PLAN SEMI-MONTHLY EVENTS SUCH AS STORY TIMES, FIELD TRIPS AND EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS THAT ALLOW FAMILIES TO GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER AND TO EXPLORE OUR CITY. FAMILIES ARE ALSO INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN AND SUPPORT ACTION OPPORTUNITIES THAT ADDRESS RACIAL DISPARITIES. EACH ACTIVITY IS DESIGNED TO ADVANCE OUR EDUCATIONAL AND CHARITABLE PURPOSES. THE BOOKS ARE INTENDED TO PROVIDE ORGANIC, RICH AND ENGAGING ENTRY POINTS SO THAT FAMILIES HAVE CONVERSATIONS ABOUT RACE AND RACISM WITH MORE REGULARITY. THE ADULT LEARNING CURRICULUM SUPPORTS PARENTS TO BECOME MORE CONFIDENT, COMPETENT AND COMFORTABLE ADDRESSING RACE AND RACISM. THE PEER COMMUNITY AND EVENTS ENABLE PARENTS TO DEVELOP RELATIONSHIPS WITH ONE ANOTHER AND FIND THEIR PLACE AMONG A LARGER SEGMENT OF THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITY THAT CHAMPIONS DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION. OUR PROGRAM ACTIVITIES ARE CARRIED OUT BY WE STORIES' FOUNDING TEAM, WHICH INCLUDES PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE IN NONPROFIT MANAGEMENT, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, RACIAL IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT AND ADULT LEARNING. IMPORTANTLY, THE FOUNDERS ARE ALSO MEMBERS OF THE ORGANIZATION'S CONSTITUENT GROUP - PARENTS OF CHILDREN AGE 0-7. OUR ACTIVITIES ARE CARRIED OUT YEAR-ROUND WITH NEW COHORTS OF FAMILIES BEING ADDED THREE TIMES PER YEAR. MORE THAN SIXTY PERCENT OF OUR ORGANIZATION'S TIME IS ALLOCATED TOWARD DIRECTLY IMPLEMENTING PROGRAMMATIC ACTIVITIES. THE REMAINING TIME IS ALLOCATED FOR FUNDRAISING AND ADMINISTRATION.
