The Arc of Buncombe County exists to empower children and adults with intellectual and develomental disabilities to realize their highest potential through advocacy, education, programs and family support.
All services that The Arc of Buncombe County provides assist individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in becoming as self sufficient and as independent as possible. Our programs are designed to empower and help with tools and resources to support the future. Our Crisis Intervention program has supported families and individuals with housing and utility assistance to ensure that families remain in their homes or are able to secure safe housing, defer eviction and move to appropriate housing to eliminate shelter stays. Over 400 families and individuals were supported through crisis intervention referral services, including rental assistance, securing housing, medical support, transportation, utilities, or any related crisis. These are considered life threatening emergencies which are more difficult for families with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
-Utility payments support lights, heat and water to have their basic needs met. -Transportation Assistance is provided to assist with appointments, grocery shopping and any child that needs transportation to school or therapy. -Health/Medication Assistance fills the gap when no other resources are available or families have not yet connected to medical support. -Operation Santa 2019: Supported over 214 families and individuals with gifts and gift cards for holiday meals. -Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD) Awareness Program: Reached over 900 in presentations and printed material. -Billboards and posters were on I-40 and I-26 and all throughout the city and county.
-Health and Wellness (Healthy Living): Presented yoga, mindfulness, and healthy living to over 300 students. -Wings for Autism: The Wings for Autism program gives families and aviation professionals the confidence to travel with ease by providing an airport "rehearsal" as well as a presentation of the aircraft and flight safety protocols. The Arc of Buncombe County provides this program in collaboration with Arc of US, Asheville Regional Airport and Allegiant. -Summer Camp and Social Enrichment: Camp in a box and respite services were also provided with camp scholarships. Due to COVID-19 services were modified, however services were still provided for over 20 individuals. -Advocacy and Liaison: For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) preserving and protecting their fundamental rights through advocacy. We connect people with disabilities, their families, professionals and others to create hope, growth, and change. This program connected services and advocated for over 500 contacts. COVID had a significant impact on families and services as normally provided. However, we were still able to meet all requested needs.
