Asheville Writers in the Schools and Community ignites social change through the power of the arts, culture and restorative self-expression.
Word on the Streetis a youth program that centers the leadership and creativity of youth of color, ages 13-19. Through arts-based programming, participants develop healthy relationships with peers and mentors while working to make a difference in their community using their voices, talents and imagination. During the current fiscal year, this program served 27 youth.
Family Voices is a cross-curricular and family-inclusive writing program for students in grades 1-6 that includes an in-school writer-in-residency and out-of-school time family engagement. Due to Covid protocols, this program was dormant during the current fiscal year. However; during January to June of 2019 this program served 50 youth and their families with 12 weeks of program activities.
