EcoForesters is a nonprofit professional forestry organization dedicated to conserving and restoring our Appalachian forests from the many threats that jeopardize their future, like unsustainable management practices, invasive species infestations, fragmentation, and forest loss due to development. We provide professional forestry consulting advice to private forestland owners, partner with other conservation organizations, and educate the public about positive impact forestry. At EcoForesters, we believe that ecologically beneficial forestry has the power to restore balance and diversity to our Appalachian forests. During 2019, EcoForesters launched our Sandy Mush Forest Restoration Project in conjunction with out partners the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy and The Forest Stewards Guild. The coalition conducted three events to hear the
community's needs and wants and to bring in natural resources agencies to help meet the goals to control non-native invasive plants and improve forest health and resiliency in the 50,000 acres Sandy Mush Watershed. We have received full funding for the project for 2020 as well. EcoForesters educated over 200 forestland owners and natural resource professionals on the benefits of ecologically beneficial forest stewardship through this partnership and other events. In 2019 EcoForesters provided professional forestry consulting services to 72 forestland owners covering over 113,000 acres. We completed the Forest Development Plan for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians' 50,000 acres and created a remote forest analysis map viewer for them. Across the Appalachians, EcoForesters' staff wrote over 50 comprehensive ecological forest stewardship plans covering over
58,000 acres, including thorough recommendations for enhancing biodiversity, wildlife habitat, high water quality, forest health, restorative timber management, recreation, and aesthetics. Furthermore, EcoForesters made on-the-ground impacts through our new 2019 invasive species control program which treated invasive plants on 138 acres of mostly permanently conserved land. EcoForesters also conducted 5 sustainable and even ecologically beneficial timber harvests (including oak restoration) along with timber appraisals on over 200 acres to meet the needs of current and future generations. Staff also were involved in advising the US Forest Service in the development of the Forest Management Plan for the 1 million acre Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests. Along with partners like MountainTrue, The Nature Conservancy, the timber products industry, The Wilderness Society, as well as recreational and wildlife advocates, EcoForesters advocated for ecological restoration and conflict resolution that will impact forest management for the next 15-20 years. We are also committed to helping the USFS implement this plan and make wise management decisions. Futhermore, we published two newsletters and hosted two landowner tours on ecological forestry in the Appalachians which reached thousands of landowners. EcoForesters is committed to making a positive impact on our forests through both education and boots-on-the-ground work.
