OpenDoors of Asheville's mission: Break the cycle of poverty through education, one child at a time.
OpenDoors works to ensure that all our students have the opportunity to enter and complete college by providing K-12 academic intervention and support, school-based advocacy, and year-round education and STEAM-based enrichments. The To & Through College Access and Completion Initiative is a whole-child approach to helping students reach their full potential. Working alongside parents and educators, we ensure our students have the stability, resource, equity, and inclusion they need to thrive. By addressing family needs, reducing institutional barriers, and providing academic intervention, support, and enrichments, our students move To & through college, becoming inspired members of our community who break the cycle of poverty for themselves, and generations to come. What began as a mission to support K-12 students as they strive to graduate high school, has grown into an initiative that
supports students going To & Through college and on to sustainable careers. In 2020, we are serving eight college students and are excited to celebrate our first cohort of graduates in the Spring of 2021. OneNeighborhood STEAM Enrichments: Students developed new interpersonal and creative skills through arts enrichments in Glass Blowing, while also earning money by selling their creations. 40 students from different schools, attended over 20 Saturday sessions of a Saturday math tutoring program designed to improve their understanding of core concepts and connect them with near-peer student, and staff, mentors who excel at math. This past year, we also introduced an afterschool homework lab to provide a safe, secure, and stable environment for students to learn while also receiving meals and mentorship.
Coaching & Consulting: OpenDoors provides works with schools, parents, and community partners to ensure that students attend the best fit possible for their unique academic needs. In 2019, we reviewed all students IEPs and met with school staff to ensure adequate supports were in place, intervening where they were not; provided equity-based coaching to 10 community partners reaching over 70 participants; and oversaw multiple (11) school transfers to new schools, including 2 college students.
