Organizations Filed Purposes: Educating, cultivating, and empowering an engaged public for the stewardship of protected public lands.

Field Crew Program: In FY 19, our Field Crew program employed 36 individuals and engaged 105 volunteers and provided over 15,376 hours of stewardship. Stewardship projects included recreation infrastructure improvements, such as trail maintenance and trail construction, and site restoration. Improvements to recreation infrastructure mitigated ecological degradation, improved recreational user safety, and directly supported the local tourism economies.

Wilderness Ranger and Wilderness Specialists Program: The FY 19 SAWS Wilderness Ranger program worked across 60 Wilderness Areas and across seven states providing over 15,000 hours of stewardship. The work focused on wilderness character monitoring, trail assessments, public education, and writing Wilderness Narratives. SAWS also staffed the Linville Gorge Information Cabin, interacting with over 10,000 visitors each season, issuing camping permits and last-minute camping supplies, as well as educating visitors on wilderness and Leave No Trace. The program employed a staff of 12.

Wilderness Skills Institute and Wilderness Education: In FY 19, the Wilderness Skills Institute trained 151 students in skills for wilderness stewardship, wilderness management, monitoring, trail maintenance, and trail construction techniques. Students applied learned skills in environmental stewardship on federally protected public lands in projects which improved recreation infrastructure, educated the recreating public, and collected data. The education program also trained over 30 members of various local stewardship organizations and students at local Job Corps centers.
