Organizations Filed Purposes: The Western Carolina Medical Society Association is the physicians' voice advocating for the health of the medical profession, the health of the patient, and the health of the community.

Held a HeartMath Retreat in May. The HeartMath Retreat was led by local physician and certified HeartMath trainer, Dr. Danna Park. Dr. Park spoke to the attendees about responding effectively to stress and understanding how responses to events renew or deplete personal resiliency. She also worked with the attendees on practicing proven and effective HeartMath techniques to increase resilience and decrease the effects of stress. There were 30 attendees. In November WCMS hosted its fourth annual burnout prevention retreat featuring Dr. Paul DeChant of Simpler Healthcare. The event was attended by more than 50 physicians, PAs, significant others and hospital/practice administrators. The event focused on burnout reduction approaches that improve the bottom line by redesigning workflow to maximize productivity and workplace wellness. Dr. DeChant did a one-

hour presentation on LEAN Transformation which teaches organizations how to maximize workflow and minimize inefficiencies. The event also featured a one-hour panel discussion with representatives from Cherokee Indian Hospital, AdventHealth Hendersonville, Mission Health and Pardee Hospital. The panelists shared with the audience ongoing initiatives at their respective organizations to reduce workplace causes of burnout. The retreat was completed with one hour of group discussions focused on sharing ideas, concerns and thoughts about workplace culture and how to make improvements. Dr. DeChant also met exclusively with hospital C-suite leadership to discuss workplace burnout. C-suite executives from all of the WNC hospital systems were invited to attend.

- Held 11 affinity groups throughout the year. - WCMS legislative advocates worked in tandem with NCMS on shaping the Heroin and Opioid Prescription and Enforcement (HOPE) Bill. - Performed 2 different innovative interviews in the region and shared their inventive ideas with members. The interviews were with Dr. Carly Brown at Ashewell Medical Group and Josh Kaaren, PA-C, along with Vicki Banks, at Biltmore Company. - WCMS and 5 board members met with several WNC legislators. - Recruited 88 new members to WCMS, and renewed 582 members from previous year.
