Organizations Filed Purposes:
Western Carolina Medical Society Foundation is a physician- and community-led organization. Its mission is to address issues of access to quality health care, disparities in health, wellness and prevention.
Foundation Accomplishments In 2019 the Foundation, through the Project Access (PA) program, facilitated services to over 2,100 patients by over 700 physicians and providers with an estimated value to the community of almost $5 million. Of those served, over 1,100 were new patients. Expanded Project Access into Madison County in collaboration with Hot Springs Health Program where a Medserve Fellow is co-located. Screened 306 patients for social determinants of health.
Began planning the expansion of the WNC Colorectal Cancer Screening Initiative to serve the uninsured in Buncombe, Madison, Mitchell, and Yancey counties. The Healthy Healer Program continued offering discounted services such as therapy, coaching, and other support services. WCMS Interpreter Network (WIN) had over 7,700 appointments helping limited English- proficient and Deaf patients communicate with their providers. In partnership with MAHEC, WIN held a 40-hour course on Cross Cultural Communication (training for interpreters).
The WCMSF Endowment provided an $8,650 grant to support CareNet Counseling of Marion to provide behavioral and mental healthcare to people who are uninsured or underinsured. The Charles Blair Health Scholar Fund provides scholarships for minority youth pursuing health careers. WCMS awarded scholarships to six students. The Dr. Brian Ling Memorial Scholarship Fund awarded two scholarships to local high school seniors who are pursuing a career in health care.
