The mission of the Chelea theater is to promote the appreciation and understanding of film by presenting a mix of first run,independent,, international, documentary, classic, and specialty films, and offering special events, educational programs, and community outreach activities.
We began 2020 with an active schedule of first run films and special programs. In the first two and a half months of the year, we showed 30 films, hosted the REEL Israel documentary film festival, and held several special events featuring discussions and guest speakers. Due to COVID-19 we closed our doors on March 16, 2020 and were shuttered for the rest of the year. We were able to maintain connections with our audiences by launching virtual films beginning in April. However, our most significant accomplishment for the year was the planning, fundraising, and implementation of a total renovation of the facilities. Approximately 90% completed by the end of 2020, the renovation includes new seats, screens, flooring, sound system, acoustics and HVAC improvements in each theater and complete remodeling of the lobby and restrooms. With this ambitious project, we were able to address numerous deficiencies in our facilities and can now provide a first rate environment for film viewing.
