TEACHERS SUPPLY STORE: IN THIS ANNUAL PROJECT, WE RAISE FUNDS TO PURCHASE CLASSROOM SUPPLIES FOR TEACHERS IN THE CHAPEL HILL-CARRBORO PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM. COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS PREVENTED US FROM SETTING UP OUR USUAL POP-UP "STORE" IN WHICH TEACHERS ARE INVITED TO SELECT SUPPLIES BY USING $75 VOUCHERS. INSTEAD, THIS YEAR THE FUNDS WERE USED TO BUY SOME GENERIC SUPPLIES THAT WOULD BE HELPFUL IN ONLINE TEACHING WHILE MORE THAN HALF OF THE TOTAL WAS USED TO PURCHASE GIFT CARDS SO THAT THE TEACHERS COULD BUY ITEMS THEY DETERMINED MOST ESSENTIAL TO THEIR SPECIFIC SITUATIONS. 50 ROTARY CLUB MEMBERS AND PUBLIC SCHOOL FOUNDATION VOLUNTEERS ASSEMBLED ALMOST 550 GIFT BAGS AND DELIVERED THEM TO ALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN THE DISTRICT. ALL NEW TEACHERS, AS WELL AS ALL SOCIAL WORKERS AND SPECIAL NEEDS TEACHERS, WERE ALSO PROVIDED WITH THESE BAGS. WITH ALMOST 550 TEACHERS DIRECTLY SERVED, WE ESTIMATE THAT 8200 STUDENTS INDIRECTLY BENEFITTED.

NICARAGUA POST HURRICANE RELIEF: IN RESPONSE TO AN APPEAL FROM JUBILEE HOUSE COMMUNITY, INC., OUR PARTNER IN PREVIOUS DENTAL AND OTHER PROJECTS IN NICARAGUA, WE PROVIDED $3,000 IN FUNDS TO HELP THEM PURCHASE BEANS THROUGH THE ROTARY BEAN PROJECT TO REPLANT AFTER MULTIPLE HURRICANES SEVERELY DAMAGED THEIR CROPS.

BICYCLES FOR UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN: IN THIS ANNUAL PROJECT, WE TYPICALLY PURCHASE AND ASSEMBLE BICYCLES THAT ARE DISTRIBUTED TO LOW INCOME FAMILIES DURING THE SERVICE LEAGUE'S CHRISTMAS HOUSE EVENT. WITH COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS, OUR BICYCLE ASSEMBLY EVENT AS WELL AS THE CHRISTMAS HOUSE EVENT WERE CANCELLED, BUT WE DONATED $5,000 TO CHAPEL HILL SERVICE LEAGUE TO BE USED TO PURCHASE CHILDREN'S BIKES OR OTHER TOYS. IN ADDITION, WE BOUGHT PREASSEMBLED BICYCLES AND HELMETS WHICH WE DONATED TO CHILDREN ATTENDING A YMCA SCHOLASTIC LEARNING CENTER FOR STUDENTS STRUGGLING WITH VIRTUAL LEARNING. ROTARY CLUB MEMBERS ASSISTED WITH THE TRANSPORTATION OF THE BICYCLES AND HELMETS.
