The organization's mission is to diagnose and to examine other aspects of early diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease, specifically heart failure in third world countries where there is severe lack of proper medical treatment.
Heart Initiative, (f/k/a African Heart Initiative) (the Corporation) is a non-profit organization created in 2009. Originally, the mission of the Corporation was to collaborate with cardiovascular leaders in Africa to improve the early diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases and heart failure in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly increasing usage of proven therapies for heart failure and improve adherence.Through the course of its work, the Corporations activities and research have evolved. The Corporation has partnered with Momentum Research, Inc., Lariboisire Hospital in Paris, and Roche Diagnostics to examine other aspects of early diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease, specifically heart failure, beyond Africa.
During 2019 the heart initiative has continued enrolling and managing the STRONG HF study which is a multi center double blind placebo controlled study performed globally assessing the implementation of approved, generic medication for the treatment of HF in patients recently admitted for acute heart failure. During this year 400 of the predicted 900 patients have been enrolled. The results of the study are expected in 2021 and should have significant impact for the treatment of heart failure a disease that inflicts approximately 6 million Americans and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. In addition the heart initiative is actively continuing to analyze and publish data from the completed studies (Thesus and BEHAEFT) both conducted in subs Sharan Africa. The heart initiative is exploring the conduct of other implementation therapies in heart failure as well as COVID-19 related initiatives
