IN ORDER TO FURTHER ITS EXEMPT PURPOSES, THE INSTITUTE FOR DEFENSE AND BUSINESS (IDB) FOSTERS SHOULDER-TO-SHOULDER EXCHANGES IN AN ACADEMIC SETTING AMONG THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE (DOD), OTHER GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATIONS, AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR, DELIVERING EDUCATION AND RESEARCH PROGRAMS THAT PRESENT STIMULATING IDEAS TO FOSTER COLLABORATION AND ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE AND INNOVATION.
BRINGING TOGETHER GOVERNMENT, PRIVATE SECTOR, AND ACADEMIC EXPERTISE FROM LOCATIONS AROUND THE WORLD TO IMPROVE THE BUSINESS FUNCTIONAL AREAS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE AND MILITARY SERVICES, AS WELL AS OTHER AREAS OF GOVERNMENTAL OPERATIONS.
STRATEGIC BROADENING SEMINARS:IDB'S STRATEGIC BROADENING SEMINARS, CREATED ORIGINALLY AT THE REQUEST OF THE U.S. ARMY, ARE A COLLECTION OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO PUSH PARTICIPANTS TO THINK DIFFERENTLY, GAIN EXPOSURE TO NON-U.S. MILITARY PERSPECTIVES, AND BE PREPARED TO OPERATE IN AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE. FIRST DELIVERED IN THE SUMMER OF 2012, THE UNC IDB STRATEGIC STUDIES FELLOWS PROGRAM (SSFP) IS A FOUR-WEEK RESIDENTIAL GRADUATE-LEVEL PROGRAM ON STRATEGIC NATIONAL SECURITY STUDIES FOR JUNIOR U.S. ARMY OFFICERS, SELECTED NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS, AND THEIR CIVIL SERVICE COUNTERPARTS. THE PROGRAM IS ADMINISTERED BY IDB IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA PARTNERSHIP FOR NATIONAL SECURITY, INDIANA UNIVERSITY, THE TRIANGLE CENTER ON TERRORISM AND HOMELAND SECURITY, AND THE TRIANGLE INSTITUTE FOR SECURITY STUDIES. THE EIGHTH COHORT OF SSFP WAS DELIVERED IN JUNE AND JULY 2019 WITH 35 ARMY AND MARINE PERSONNEL GRADUATING. THE STUDENTS LIVED AND ATE AT CAMPUS FACILITIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL. CLASSES WERE DELIVERED ON THE UNC CAMPUS AS WELL AS AT NEIGHBORING UNIVERSITIES, AND CORPORATIONS. GRADUATES RECEIVED TWO GRADUATE CREDIT HOURS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL. THE IDB DENSE URBAN STUDIES STRATEGIC BROADENING SEMINAR (SBS) IS A TWO-WEEK INTENSIVE EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR U.S. ARMY STUDENTS TO EXPLORE AND UNDERSTAND THE CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE AND URBAN GEOGRAPHY OF CITIES, THE TECHNOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL CONNECTEDNESS OF CITY NETWORKS, AND THE CULTURE AND BEHAVIOR OF PEOPLE AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT IN DENSE URBAN AREAS. IN 2019, THE PROGRAM WAS DELIVERED TWICE WITH SPRING AND FALL COHORTS TOTALING 59 PARTICIPANTS. THE ARMY'S SBS OFFICE ASKED IDB FOR TWO PILOT TRAINING WITH INDUSTRY PROGRAMS IN 2018: ONE FOCUSED ON INFORMATION OPERATIONS, AND ANOTHER ON LOGISTICS. THE INDUSTRY BASED BROADENING-INFORMATION OPERATIONS (IB2-IO), AND INDUSTRY BASED BROADENING-LOGISTICS (IB2-LOG) PROGRAMS DEBUTED IN AUGUST AND OCTOBER 2018, RESPECTIVELY. THESE PROGRAMS HELP TRANSFER "BEST OF BREED" BUSINESS EXAMPLES INTO THE MILITARY ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT AS THE ARMY RECENTLY REDUCED OPPORTUNITIES IN ITS TRADITIONAL TRAINING WITH INDUSTRY PROGRAM. TWO COHORTS OF IB2-LOG WERE DELIVERED IN 2019 TOTALING 47 PARTICIPANTS; IB2-IO WAS OFFERED ONCE IN 2019 WITH A TOTAL OF 23 PARTICIPANTS COMPLETING THE PROGRAM.
LOGISTICS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY (LOG21):LOGISTICS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY (LOG21) IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE EARLY-CAREER, HIGH-POTENTIAL LOGISTICIANS WITH A COMPREHENSIVE AND TAILORED EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE AIMED AT FURTHERING THEIR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WHILE GIVING THEM A GLIMPSE INTO THE POTENTIAL REWARDS AND PROMISE OF A LONG-TERM CAREER IN LOGISTICS AND SUSTAINMENT. 2018 SAW CONTINUED STRONG DEMAND FOR LOG21 WITH PROGRAMS IN MARCH, JUNE, AUGUST, AND SEPTEMBER. THE FOUR OFFERINGS OF LOG21 IN 2019 TOTALED 125 PARTICIPANTS.BY TARGETING THE PREVIOUSLY UNDERSERVED EARLY-CAREER DEMOGRAPHIC, LOG21 HAS ESTABLISHED ITSELF AS A KEY COMPONENT OF THE IDB'S LOGISTICS AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION PORTFOLIO. PROGRAM EVALUATIONS ARE VERY HIGH; STUDENTS FINISH THE COURSE WITH A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THEY CAN TAP INTO THEIR CROSS-SERVICE, CROSS-AGENCY, AND INTRA-INDUSTRY PROFESSIONAL NETWORK TO BE MORE RESILIENT IN THE FACE OF CHANGE AND DEVELOP MORE ROBUST SOLUTIONS TO EXISTING AND FUTURE CHALLENGES.
AIR FORCE CONTINUOUS PROCESS IMPROVEMENT FOR EXECUTIVES PROGRAMS:IN JULY 2016, IDB WON A COMPETITIVE AIR FORCE PROCUREMENT TO DEVELOP AND DELIVER A SERIES OF CONTINUOUS PROCESS IMPROVEMENT (CPI) COURSES FOR AIR FORCE SENIOR LEADERS CHARGED WITH IMPLEMENTING CPI IN THEIR COMMANDS/ORGANIZATIONS. THESE TWO-DAY PROGRAMS ARE TO BE DELIVERED ACROSS THE UNITED STATES IN LOCATIONS INCLUDING COLORADO SPRINGS, CO; DAYTON, OH; CHAPEL HILL, NC; SAN ANTONIO, TX; AND WASHINGTON, DC. THE FINAL OPTION YEAR OF THE CONTINUOUS PROCESS IMPROVEMENT FOR EXECUTIVES CONTRACT WAS ORIGINALLY DUE TO EXPIRE IN JULY 2019. THE AIR FORCE EXTENDED THE PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE UNTIL JULY 2020 IN ORDER TO ADD MORE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES. IDB DELIVERED FOUR OFFERINGS OF THE "CPI FOR EXECUTIVES" PROGRAM IN 2019 TO A TOTAL OF 78 PARTICIPANTS. AS PART OF THE CONTRACT EXTENSION, A NEW PROGRAM WAS DEVELOPED: THE AIR FORCE INNOVATION IMPROVEMENT CONSULTANTS WORKSHOP (AFI2CW). THIS PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO DRIVE THE AIR FORCE EMPHASIS ON SPREADING AND PROMOTING THE CULTURE OF CONTINUOUS PROCESS IMPROVEMENT THROUGHOUT THE ENTERPRISE. WING-LEVEL CPI PROJECT PERSONNEL LEARN TO NURTURE AND DEVELOP INNOVATION FROM ALL LEVELS AND TO HELP THE INNOVATORS "PITCH" THEIR IDEAS TO DECISION-MAKERS. IDB DEVELOPED AND DELIVERED SEVEN OF THESE THREE-DAY PROGRAMS IN 2019 TO A TOTAL OF 204 PARTICIPANTS. AT LEAST FOUR MORE AFI2CW PROGRAMS ARE SCHEDULED IN 2020.ADDITIONALLY, UNDER THIS CONTRACT, IDB SUPPORTED THE AIR FORCE WITH ONE OF ITS MAJOR OF ITS ORGANIC TRAINING INITIATIVES, THE MASTER PROCESS OFFICER SUMMIT, BY RECRUITING FACULTY AND ASSISTING WITH CURRICULUM DESIGN.
