To honor, renew, and build community in the historic Northside and Pine Knolls neighborhoods of Chapel Hill and Carrboro, NC.
Community Organizing and Housing Support: Expenses : Organized neighbors to oversee a community land bank of 41 properties; collaborated to complete emergency and comprehensive home repairs for two dozen elderly residents; implemented a property tax mitigation program for 40 low-income residents; collaborated with housing agencies to create four units of permanently affordable housing; coordinated wills clinics and home preservation workshops for 70 elderly households; trained and supervised over 300 volunteers for a total of 6067 total hours of engaged service, including supporting a daily, fresh food distribution program that feeds over 1000 people a month; delivered 350 grocery boxes and 2,600 hot meals directly to households during pandemic months.
Neighborhood Events, Exhibits, and Oral History: Expenses : Organized 16 community events, gatherings, and festivals involving nearly 2000 residents; mobilized a Student Leadership Group to connect student and long-term neighbors through engagement efforts; produced and delivered a free community newspaper to 850+ households each month; conducted or processed dozens of oral history interviews to be added to our oral history trust; created a Community Review Board of residents to oversee representation; implemented design of From the Rock Wall, an online home for community history.
Learning Across Generations: Expenses: Youth Leadership and Civil Rights Education: Facilitated civil rights, oral history, and "Telling Your Story" audio skills workshops for over 2500 K-12 students and community members; coordinated a team of 20 Community Mentors to participate in workshops and share their stories firsthand; hosted 500 people for our neighborhood history audio tour.
