Organizations Filed Purposes:
To empower and inspire North Carolinas Jewish college students to pursue their own Jewish journeys by creating strong communities and transformative experiences.
Peer engagement, community building, leadership development, and Jewish education are at the core of NC Hillels work. NC Hillel engaged roughly 2,000 students (including 1,000 Jewish students) on campuses across the state through diverse initiatives, including: a) student leaders who engage their Jewish peers through informal conversations, developing relationships and connecting their peers to meaningful Jewish experiences; b) a range of programs meant to create community, including hosting students for Hillel Hangouts and Late Night Study Breaks; c) training and mentoring student leaders, which promotes community-building and peer engagement; and d) the Jewish Learning Fellowship, a ten-week conversational seminar, and other educational programs inspire students to explore Jewish ideas, deepening their Jewish identities.
Each year, NC Hillel engages and educates hundreds of students about Israel, including bringing at least 80 annually on a free, ten-day Birthright Israel trip. In the summer of 2019, NC Hillel connected 27 students with 8-week internships in Israel. UNCs annual Israel Fest, as well as an Israel table at International Festivals on several campuses across the state, are important opportunities to celebrate Israel on campus. Moreover, NC Hillel hosts speakers about diverse subjects related to Israel. In early March 2020, UNC Hillel ran its second Perspectives trip, bringing 25 students - primarily non-Jews - to Israel to learn in-depth about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.
Shabbat and holiday meals and celebrations are a staple of NC Hillels calendar. Each Friday night at UNC Chapel Hill, 50-125 students gather to celebrate Shabbat, strengthening community and carving out time and space to rest and recharge with pluralistic religious services and a communal dinner. Other campuses typically meet every other week. Hillel also convenes the community for Jewish holidays including Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Chanukah, and Passover, in addition to less well-known holidays of particular value for those students who are unable to travel home for the holiday, due to schedule, distance, or cost. All told, NC Hillel served 3,000 Shabbat and holiday meals across the state in 2019-20.
