Organizations Filed Purposes: ASSISTANCE LEAGUE OF CHARLOTTE IS THE 93RD CHAPTER OF ASSISTANCE LEAGUE AND WAS FOUNDED IN 1992 AS A NONPROFIT CORPORATION. ITS MEMBER VOLUNTEERS ARE DEDICATED TO IMPROVING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES THROUGH COMMUNITY-BASED PHILANTHROPIC PROGRAMS.

OPERATION SCHOOL BELL PROVIDED NEW CLOTHING FOR CHILDREN IN NEED IN THE CHARLOTTE-MECKLENBURG SCHOOLS. TEACHERS AND COUNSELORS REFER STUDENTS AND TRANSPORT THEM TO THE OPERATION SCHOOL BELL STORE WHERE, WITH THE HELP OF AN ASSISTANCE LEAGUE OF CHARLOTTE MEMBER, EACH CHILD SELECTS A NEW JACKET, TWO UNIFORMS, SIX PAIRS OF SOCKS AND UNDERWEAR, A PAIR OF SCHOOL SHOES, A BOOK, AND A GROOMING KIT. IN 2019-2020, OEPRATION SCHOHOL BELL CLOTHED 9,245 CHILDREN IN CHARLOTTE MECKLENBURG SYSTEM ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS THROUGH THE STORE AND THROUGH OUTREACH INITIATIVES.

OPERATION CHECK HUNGER WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1992 AND IS DESIGNED TO ALLEVIATE CHILDREN'S HUNGER BY DISTRIBUTING FOOD IN THESE WAYS: (1) PROVIDING WEEKLY TAKE HOME BACKPACKS TO HUNDRED OF CHILDREN IN SEVEN LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS - EACH BACKPACK CONTAINS NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS FOR THE STUDENT AND FAMILY TO SUPPLEMENT THEIR WEEKEND MEALS; (2) MAINTAINING TWO SCHOOL EMERGENCY FOOD PANTRIES DESIGNED TO HELP AT-RISK FAMILIES; (3) DELIVERING MONTHLY SNACKS TO A SPECIAL NEEDS SCHOOL TO SUPPLEMENT LIFE SKILLS FIELD TRIPS AND APPLESAUCE TO ASSIST WITH ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION; (4) MAKING A BULK PROTEIN DONATION TO THE LOCAL FOOD BANK OR FOOD ASSISTANCE AGENCY; (5) MAKING DONATIONS TO MOBILE PANTRIES THAT FEED FAMILIES WITHIN SELECTED SCHOOL COMMUNITIES. IN 2019-2020, 450 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN WERE PROVIDED WITH WEEKEND PACKPACKS. OPERATION CHECK HUNGER ALSO ESTABLISHED HART OF THE HOME IN 2019 THAT PROVIDES SMALL ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES AND OTHER KITCHEN ITEMS TO FAMILIES MOVING INTO PERMANENT HOUSING THROUGH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY. 16 FAMILIES WERE ASSISTED IN 2019- 2020.

MECKLENBURG COUNTY TEEN COURT IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE JUVENILES WITH NO PREVIOUS CONVICTIONS A SECOND CHANCE WHEN THEY ADMIT THEIR GUILT TO A MISDEMEANOR OFFENSE, AGREE TO BE TRIED BY A JURY OF THEIR PEERS, AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR ACTIONS. DEFENDANTS ARE REFERRED TO TEEN COURT ONLY BY THE DEPARTMENT OF JUVENILE JUSTICE AND BY SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS AND ARE THOROUGHLY SCREENED FOR APPROPRIATENESS TO THE PROGRAM. TEEN COURT ALSO TRAINS TEEN VOLUNTEERS BETWEEN THE AGES OF ELEVEN AND EIGHTEEN IN THE LEGAL PROCESS AS JURORS, CLERKS OF COURT, BAILIFFS, AND ATTORNEYS, EMPHASIZING COMMUNICATION, LEADERSHIP, AND DIVERSITY SKILLS. MECKLENBURG COUNTY TEEN COURT ASSISTED 293 YOUTH OFFENDERS IN 2019-2020.
