Organizations Filed Purposes:
To improve the reading, writing and spelling skills of low-income students who struggle with literacy by providing free, long-term one-on-one instruction from highly trained volunteer tutors.
Augustine Literacy Project was originally founded as a mission of St. Peters Episcopal Church and became a separate and independent organization in 2018. Following our mission, we improve the reading, writing, and spelling skills of low-income students who struggle with literacy skills. We train and support volunteer tutors who provide free, long-term, one-to-one instruction. We teach children how to read words using a research-based phonics curriculum. The Augustine Literacy Project uses the Orton-Gillingham approach and Wilson Reading System materials. Orton-Gillingham is a multi-sensory, explicit, systematic approach to reading instruction that has been effective with students who struggle with literacy for a variety of reasons. You will find our tutors in Charlotte-Mecklenburg area elementary schools, working primarily with first through third graders at Title I schools. Volunteer tutors receive 42 hours of training, and each tutor provides one-on-one tutoring two times per week to a child during the school day. Our long-term, one-on-one tutoring approach provides benefits to both the children and the tutors: Tutor one child, Change two lives. Despite an early end to tutoring during the 2019-2020 school year results include: 4,963 tutoring sessions; 215 students served; 99% of the students improved in knowledge of letters, digraphs and sight words; 85% of our tutors planned to return for the 2020-21 school year.Augustine Literacy Project tutoring was halted in schools in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In response to the pandemic and to continue to support vulnerable children, ALP has developed a virtual method to deliver our lesson plan. Virtual tutoring has the potential to be a significant addition to ALP that will allow us to reach more students. What began as a response to the impact on students of the Covid-19 health crisis may help us increase numbers and diversity in our tutor population, and reach more students than our previous, in-person only model.
