TO PREPARE HIGH-PERFORMING, UNDER-RESOURCED STUDENTS TO ENTER, EXCEL AND GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE.
CAROLINA YOUTH COALITION ("CYC") CARRIES OUT PROGRAMS THAT PROMOTE INTELLECTUAL AND EMOTIONAL EXPLORATION AND RISK-TAKING BY OFFERING PROGRAMS THAT ALLOW STUDENTS, "FELLOWS," TO THINK AND EXPRESS THEMSELVES FREELY. CYC'S PRIMARY AIMS ARE CULTIVATING FELLOWS' INTELLECTUAL CURIOUSITIES, GUIDING THEM TOWARD GREATER SELF-AWARENESS AND SELF-ACCEPTANCE, AND FOSTERING A SPACE IN WHICH ALL CAN DEVELOP A CRITICAL CONSCIOUSNESS. SUCCESS IN THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS IS CRUCIAL, AND TO THAT END, FELLOWS ARE ASKED TO PERFORM AT A HIGH LEVEL IN A VARIETY OF WAYS. YET, CYC'S MAIN GOAL IS TO HELP STUDENTS BECOME CRITICAL AND CREATIVE THINKERS, AND THOUGHTFUL, RESILIENT, ENGAGED CITIZENS.DURING FISCAL YEAR 2020, CYC'S PRIMARY PROGRAM ACTIVITY WAS ITS COLLEGE SUCCESS PROGRAM, WHICH PAIRS FELLOWS WITH MENTORS AND A YEAR-ROUND COMPREHENSIVE SET OF COLLEGE-PREPARATORY RESOURCES TO ENSURE THAT EACH FELLOW IS PREPARED TO IDENTIFY, GAIN ENTRANCE TO, AND SUCCESSFULLY MATRICULATE THROUGH A COLLEGE THAT IS AN ACADEMIC, SOCIAL AND FINANCIAL FIT FOR EACH FELLOW. CORE PROGRAMS AND SERVICES INCLUDED:- COLLEGE COUNSELING- ACT PREP- COLLEGE TOURS- WRITING COACHING- CAREER EXPLORATION- ACADEMIC TUTORING- LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENTTHE FOLLOWING WERE SOME OF THE PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR CYC DURING THE YEAR:- SERVED 70 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND 15 COLLEGE STUDENTS.- 68% OF SENIORS MET 3 OR MORE ACT COLLEGE READINESS BENCHMARKS AND 53% MET 4 OR MORE- 3.0 AVERAGE ACT COMPOSITE GROWTH OF SENIORS- AN ACT COMPOSITE SCORE AVERAGE OF 24 - 57% OF 4-YEAR COLLEGE ATTENDEES ATTENDING DEBT-FREE- $15.5 MILLION IN SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS OFFERED TO THE CLASS OF 2019 ($3.2 MILLION ACCEPTED)
