Organizations Filed Purposes:
Legal Services of Southern Piedmont (LSSP) provides legal assistance in civil matters to low-income persons in the Charlotte area and west-central North Carolina. Our mission is to provide a full measure of justice for those in need.
Family Support and Health Care ProgramDuring FY 2020 this program made a significant difference in the lives of low-income clients. The program served 177 clients with Medicaid and health related matters and 337 clients with Social Security and other benefits matters. The program obtained or preserved Medicaid, Social Security, SSI, Work First Family Assistance or Food Stamp benefits for a total value of almost $7,205,186 in benefits. The program also assisted 71 veterans with advice or representation for VA benefits and 336 additional veterans with other legal problems. The program also continued a class action case, challenging the lack of due process protection for Medicaid recipients when services are denied, reduced or terminated and coordinated health care navigation activities relating to the Affordable Care Act.
Consumer Protection and Veterans ProgramDuring FY 2020 this program made a significant difference in the lives of low-income clients. The program offered legal advice and resolved disputes for 182 clients with housing issues. The program also helped 264 clients to expunge criminal records.
Immigrant Justice ProgramDuring FY 2020 this program made a significant difference in the lives of low-income clients, specifically immigrants. The program provided advice and obtained or enforced 33 domestic violence protective order. The program also provided advice, obtained legal immigration status, prepared immigration paperwork, and prevented eviction for 361 clients.
