THE CHARLOTTE MUSEUM OF HISTORY IS A 501 (C)(3) NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT INTERPRETS AND PRESERVES CHARLOTTE'S UNIQUE HISTORY, ENRICHING THE COMMUNITY THROUGH SHARED UNDERSTANDING OF THE PAST AND INSPIRING DIALOGUE ABOUT THE FUTURE.
THE CHARLOTTE MUSEUM OF HISTORY EDUCATES A BROAD PUBLIC AUDIENCE ABOUT THE FOUNDING STORY OF CHARLOTTE AND MECKLENBURG COUNTY, IN THE CONTEXT OF NATIONAL HISTORY. OUR MISSION IS TO PROVIDE QUALITY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING AT THE HEZEKIAH ALEXANDER HOME SITE CA. 1774 AND IS LISTED ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES, AT VENUES IN THE GREATER CHARLOTTE/MECKLENBURG COUNTY REGION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OTHER CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS, AND AT THE MUSEUM BUILDING. OUR MISSION ENCOMPASSES THE PRESERVATION OF THE HISTORIC HOME SITE AND SURROUNDING BUILDINGS AND ENVIRONMENT. THE MUSEUM BUILDING IS THE LOCATION OF TWO CONTINUING EXHIBITIONS: ROCK HOUSE MYSTERIES AND CHARLOTTE NEIGHBORHOODS. THE HEZEKIAH ALEXANDER HOUSE IS THE LAST EXTANT HOME OF A FRAMER OF NORTH CAROLINA'S 1776 CONSTITUTION AND BILL OF RIGHTS. IT IS ALSO THE OLDEST EXISTING HOUSE IN MECKLENBURG COUNTY/CHARLOTTE REGION.
GENERAL ADMISSION. THE MUSEUM IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FIVE DAYS PER WEEK FOR GENERAL ADMISSION TO THE MUSEUM'S ART AND HISTORY EXHIBITIONS, AS WELL AS FOR GUIDED TOURS OF MECKLENBURG COUNTY'S OLDEST HOME, THE HEZEKIAH ALEXANDER HOMESITE.
K-12 FIELD TRIPS. EACH YEAR, THOUSANDS OF LOCAL STUDENTS FROM GRADES K-12 PARTICIPATE IN A SERIES OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS BOTH AT THE MUSEUM AND OFFSITE (OUTREACH PROGRAMS). PROGRAMS EXPLORE THE HISTORY OF OUR REGION THROUGH A SERIES OF INTERACTIVE JOURNEYS. THE 1774 HEZEKIAH ALEXANDER HOMESITE AND THE MUSEUM'S COLLECTION OF UNIQUE ARTIFACTS TELL THE STORY OF CHARLOTTE'S GROWTH FROM A SLEEPY HAMLET IN THE CAROLINA BACKCOUNTRY TO THE MAJOR METROPOLITAN CITY IT IS TODAY, ENABLING STUDENTS TO MEANINGFULLY ENGAGE IN LOCAL HISTORY THROUGH HANDS-ON EXPERIENCES.
SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL EVENTS FOR THE PUBLIC. THE MUSEUM OFFERS A SERIES OF EDUCATIONAL EVENTS FOR K-12 AND ADULT AUDIENCES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. IN FY18, THIS INCLUDED A SERIES OF FREE FAMILY DAYS (CONNECT WITH CULTURE DAY, A NEW AFRICAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE FESTIVAL, TWELFTH NIGHT CELEBRATION), FREE ADULT PROGRAMS (CITY WALKS NEIGHBORHOOD WALKING TOURS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH UNCC'S URBAN INSTITUTE; A WWI LECTURE SERIES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CHARLOTTE MECKLENBURG LIBRARY, AND THE RON HANKINS "HISTORY TALKS" LECTURE SERIES), AS WELL AS EVENTS THAT WERE FREE WITH GENERAL ADMISSION (HOLIDAYS AND THE HOMESITE, CHAMPIONS OF HISTORY DAY, AND MECK DEC DAY).
