CANOPY HOUSING FOUNDATION IS THE CHARITABLE ARM OF THE CANOPY REALTOR ASSOCIATION AND ACTIVELY SUPPORTS THE FULL HOUSING CONTINUUM FROM HOMELESSNESS TO HOMEOWNERSHIP; PROMOTES AFFORDABLE HOMEOWNERSHIP; PROVIDES FUNDING TO CREATE HOUSING OPPORTUNITIES; AND POSITIONS AND DEVELOPS REALTORS AS LEADERS IN PHILANTHROPIC ACTIVITIES.
REALTORS CREATING HOUSING OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH ADVOCACY, EDUCATION, FUNDING AND LEADERSHIP.
THE FOUNDATION PROVIDES VARIOUS EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. THE WORKFORCE HOUSING CERTIFICATE PROGRAM ("WHCP") EDUCATES REALTORS TO WORK WITH FIRST-TIME BUYERS AND CLIENTS PURCHASING IN THE AFFORDABLE PRICE RANGE (UP TO 80% OF MEDIAN INCOME) AND HELPS THE PUBLIC MORE READILY IDENTIFY REALTORS WHO HAVE ACQUIRED THE EDUCATION AND SKILLS TO CONDUCT REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS IN THE WORKFORCE-HOUSING MARKET. THE WORKFORCE HOUSING FAIR/NEIGHBORHOOD SHOWCASE, WHICH TOOK THE FORM OF PROJECT REACH (REALTORS ENGAGING AND CREATING HOPE) WAS HELD IN OCTOBER WITH THE INTENT OF INTRODUCING REALTORS TO NEIGHBORHOOD ORGANIZATIONS WHO ADDRESS LOCAL HOUSING CONCERNS. MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FIVE REALTOR VOLUNTEERS WORKED AT FIVE AREA NON-PROFITS WITH $2,500 ULTIMATELY BEING DISTRIBUTED TO THE PARTICIPATING ORGANIZATIONS TO ASSIST THEM IN ACHIEVING THEIR MISSIONS.
THE FOUNDATION CONTRIBUTED TO LOCAL NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS WHOSE PURPOSE IS ADDRESSING UNMET HOUSING NEEDS AND AFFORDABLE WORKFORCE HOUSING NEEDS IN THE GREATER CHARLOTTE AREA THROUGH ITS TWO GRANT PROGRAMS, 1) HABITAT SUPPORT PROGRAM: EIGHT AREA HABITAT FOR HUMANITY ORGANIZATIONS WERE GRANTED RESTRICTED PROGRAMMING SUPPORT TO CONTINUE THEIR WORK ON BEHALF OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING, AND 2) COMMUNITY GRANTS PROGRAM: SIXTEEN NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS WERE GRANTED RESTRICTED PROGRAM SUPPORT TO ADDRESS UNMET HOUSING NEEDS. IN ADDITION TO THE GRANT FUNDING, THE FOUNDATION HONORS AN INDIVIDUAL, PROJECT OR ORGANIZATION THROUGH ITS ANNUAL HUMANITARIAN AWARD. IN 2019, TWO INDIVIDUALS (FAMILY MEMBERS) WERE RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR SIGNIFICANT HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS IN THE COMMUNITY AND A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION(S) OF THEIR CHOICE WAS SUBSEQUENTLY AWARDED FUNDS IN THEIR HONOR. FOR 2019, THE DESIGNATED ORGANIZATION THAT RECEIVED FUNDING AS A RESULT OF THE HUMANITARIAN AWARD WAS HOPE OF MOORESVILLE, A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO ALLEVIATING HOMELESSNESS BY HELPING THOSE SEEKING HOUSING, FOOD AND EMPLOYMENT.
REALTORS(R) CARE DAY IS AN ANNUAL COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT COORDINATED BY THE FOUNDATION WHERE MORE THAN SEVEN HUNDRED REALTOR VOLUNTEERS WORKED TO PROVIDE CRITICAL HOME REPAIRS FOR ELEVEN HOMES IN MECKLENBURG AND IREDELL COUNTIES ON APRIL 5, 2019. INCLUDED IN THE PROJECT WAS AN AFFORDABLE HOUSING APARTMENT COMPLEX OWNED AND OPERATED BY THE HARVEST CENTER, A LOCAL NON-PROFIT THAT WORKS TO PROVIDE TRANSITIONAL HOUSING FOR THE HOMELESS. SPECIAL NEEDS WERE ALSO ADDRESSED AT SERENITY HOUSE, A HOME FOR TERMINALLY ILL PATIENTS. IN ADDITION, REPAIRS AND IMPROVEMENTS WERE ALSO MADE TO THE PINE VALLEY COMMUNITY CENTER AND PARK, ONE OF THE OLDEST AFRICAN-AMERICAN NEIGHBORHOODS IN THE CITY. IN SELECTING WORK SITES, THE FOUNDATION WORKS WITH LOCAL HOUSING PARTNERS TO IDENTIFY ELIGIBLE HOMEOWNERS WHO THEN GO THROUGH A DETAILED APPLICATION AND VERIFICATION PROCESS. SINCE ITS INCEPTION TEN YEARS AGO, THIS PROJECT HAS ASSISTED TWO HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-ONE FAMILIES AND NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS.
