TO GUARD THE CIVIL RIGHTS OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES BY EMPOWERING OURSELVES AND OTHERS TO LIVE AS WE CHOOSE.
INDEPENDENT LIVING CORE SERVICES: AS A CENTER FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING, DISABILITY RIGHTS & RESOURCES PROVIDES FIVE CORE SERVICES: INFORMATION & REFERRAL, INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS TRAINING, PEER COUNSELING, ADVOCACY, AND COMMUNITY INTEGRATION. INFORMATION & REFERRAL SERVICES INCLUDE PROVIDING INFORMATION TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES ABOUT COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS THAT MAY BE OF INTEREST TO THEM, AND REFERRALS TO OTHER ORGANIZATIONS THAT MAY BE ABLE TO ASSIST THEM. INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS TRAINING CONSISTS OF PROVIDING TRAINING TO INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES IN PERFORMING DAILY LIFE ACTIVITIES WITHOUT ASSISTANCE, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO USING PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION AND PERSONAL FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT. PEER COUNSELING SERVICES ARE OFFERED BY STAFF, WHO HAVE DISABILITIES THEMSELVES, TO HELP INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES REACH THEIR PERSONAL INDEPENDENT LIVING GOALS THROUGH COUNSELING, REFERRALS, AND EDUCATION ABOUT AVAILABLE RESOURCES. TO PROVIDE ADVOCACY SERVICES, THE AGENCY WORKS WITH THE PUBLIC, GOVERNMENT, AND BUSINESSES TO OVERCOME BARRIERS THAT STAND BETWEEN AN INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP AND AN INDEPENDENT QUALITY OF LIFE. COMMUNITY INTEGRATION SERVICES (I) FACILITATE THE TRANSITION OF INDIVIDUALS WITH SIGNIFICANT DISABILITIES FROM NURSING HOMES AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS TO HOME AND COMMUNITY-BASED RESIDENCES, WITH THE REQUISITE SUPPORTS AND SERVICES, (II) PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO INDIVIDUALS WITH SIGNIFICANT DISABILITIES WHO ARE AT RISK OF ENTERING INSTITUTIONS SO THAT THE INDIVIDUALS MAY REMAIN IN THE COMMUNITY; AND (III) FACILITATE THE TRANSITION OF YOUTH WHO ARE INDIVIDUALS WITH SIGNIFICANT DISABILITIES TO POSTSECONDARY LIFE. ALL OF THESE CORE SERVICES ARE PROVIDED IN MECKLENBURG, GASTON, UNION, AND CABARRUS COUNTIES.
COVID-19 COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS: DISABILITY RIGHTS & RESOURCES PARTNERS WITH OTHER COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, BUSINESSES, AND GOVERNMENT ENTITIES (SUCH AS SCHOOLS AND SCHOOL SYSTEMS), TO FUND PROGRAMS AND SERVICES THAT WILL ASSIST INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES WHO HAVE BEEN NEGATIVELY IMPACTED BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC.
COMMUNITY EDUCATION: AGENCY STAFF WHO ARE KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT ISSUES FACING THE DISABILITY COMMUNITY, AND THE CIVIL RIGHTS OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES, PROVIDE PRESENTATIONS TO BUSINESSES, GOVERNMENT ENTITIES, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC ON A VARIETY OF TOPICS. TOPICS INCLUDE DISABILITY AWARENESS AND SENSITIVITY, AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT COMPLIANCE, AND MANY OTHERS.
