Organizations Filed Purposes:
AAD teach and support young adults who have dropped out of school in order to reconnect them to the opportunities an education provides. AAD help students gain critical reading skills,earn their NC Equivalency Diploma and complete college preparatory training so they can succeed.
The Achievement Academy of Durhams High School Equivalency program serves students who enroll at AAD with at least a 9th grade level reading. Students in the program work in teacher-facilitated classes, with a maximum student teacher ratio of 8:1. Students are prepared to pass the 4 subject area tests: social studies, language arts, math and science. The local community college is the testing site. In 2016/17, 76 students who passed a total of 87 tests and 19 students graduated.
The Achievement Academy of Durhams Starting Points program serves students who enroll at AAD with elementary-middle school reading levels. With help from trained volunteer tutors, staff is able to offer intensive, individualized diagnostic and instructional support to help students make rapid progress in reading, writing, language and mathematics. In 2016/17, the program served 33 students. 64% of the students who remained enrolled for at least one quarter increased their reading proficiency by one or more grade levels.
Achievement University - In addition to the high-school equivalency programs, we have two contract employees that provide additional services.They are our Employer Engagement Associate and our Postsecondary ResourceSpecialist. These are contract employees who work as part of our Made in Durham collaboration. The Employer Engagement Associate works to help our students develop job readiness skills through internships, seminars, andfield trips. The Postsecondary Resource Specialist runs a College Readiness seminar for all students who have passed two of the four subject-area exams. She also supports our graduates in their post-secondary pursuits.Enrolled post-secondary students (and graduates) have access to academic tutoring, advisement, case management support, and paid work-study employment.
