Organizations Filed Purposes:
To create opportunities for youth and adults with physical disabilities to play individual, team and recreational sports, finding the player within.
Adaptive Sports Programs: Bridge II Sports (BIIS) provided approximately 250 total program hours of adaptive, individual and team sport opportunities impacting over 750 individuals in 2020, in weekly adapted sports programs, serving cross physical disabilities. During the pandemic, Bridge II Sports pivoted to Zoom gatherings and porch talks to keep athletes living with physical disabilities engaged and provide encouragement during local, state and federal imposed limitations on in-person gatherings. Bridge II Sports implemented and enforced COVID-19 policies and over 600 participants attended 150 sessions for air rifle, archery, boccia, cycling, goal ball, golf and wheelchair basketball adapted sports programming. Twenty (20) unique athletes and family members had private consultations with BIIS highly qualified and trained staff to learn the various adapted sports opportunities available to live healthy, engaged and active lifestyles. In 2020, Bridge II Sports converted Valor Games Southeast to a virtual platform with over 500 in attendance, partnering with MetLife, CISCO, RTI International, Biogen, DOMTAR/HDIS, Golden Corral and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In addition, BIIS developed and implemented the BIIS Veteran Fitness Challenge to engage Veterans and Members of the Armed Forces in active and healthy lifestyles. BIIS also organized an in-person Veteran Sports Day and remoted cycling time trial with thirty (30) participants. Approximately 1,500 Volunteer hours were donated in 2020 supporting the mission of Bridge II Sports.
Public Education and Communication: During 2020, Bridge II Sports impacted the community by providing 54 Community Education Events to over 2,300 participants including in-person, WebEx and Virtual platforms. Media impact was over 3M due to events, PSA, and word of mouth. Presentations included, but were not limited to, Health and Human Services Presidents Council, Local County Commissioners, Duke Spina-Bifida Clinic, WISE Greater Raleigh, and NCServes. EveryBODYPlaysNC, Bridge II Sports school initiative program, continues to change discrimination and expectation by introducing school children throughout North Carolina to adapted sports, challenging perceptions of disability.
