The Carolina Abortion Fund believes that everyone should be able to exercise reproductive self-determination, regardless of their income. Through small grants, we enable those with demonstrated need to overcome financial barriers to accessing abortion services in North and South Carolina. Founded in 2011 by a group of committed volunteers, the Carolina Abortion Fund is a grassroots feminist organization dedicated to reproductive justice for all communities in the Carolinas.
The Carolina Abortion Fund supports individuals who have decided to have an abortion by providing financial, logistical, and emotional support.
Abortion Assistance - CAF operates a funding helpline where calls are received by a voicemail system and returned by volunteers and staff who help distribute financial assistance and resource referrals to callers. We receive roughly 500 calls a month and provide $100-$300 grants toward abortion procedures. Funds are transferred directly to clinics once a month. CAF provided financial assistance to 2,039 callers in the year ended June 30, 2020.
Community Outreach - CAF expanded programming and volunteer support into new areas of North Carolina and into South Carolina. This includes relationships with clinic escort groups, medical and law students at multiple universities, and healthcare workers in and outside of abortion clinics. CAF collaborated with local and national abortion rights and reproductive health organizations to present film screenings, discussion panels, and interactive sessions on demystifying abortion care.
Reproductive Justice - CAF offered doula training sessions across the state to train community members able to offer emotional and practical resources to local callers. We collaborated with other local, regional, and national nonprofits to reassess our service delivery models and strengthen our programming at intersections of abortion care, economic justice, and other reproductive healthcare needs. CAF represented in conversations of overlapping scopes including queer healthcare and harm reduction.
