The Champ Foundation supports research toward better treatments and a cure for diseases casued by mitochondrial DNA deletions, such as Pearson syndrome. These diseases are rare. For example, there have only been around 100 reported cases of Pearson syndrome.
In 2020, The Champ Foundation continued to fund research projects at Boston Children's Hospital, University of Miami, and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The Champ Foundation received a grant to establish a SLSMDS Research Network. To establish the Research Network, we hosted a virtual international conference, established a biospecimen repository, began developing a multi-site Natural History Study, and launched the Champ Foundation Registry, a research study of individuals with single large-scale mitochondrial DNA deletions (SLSMDS).
