The East Durham Childrens Initiative is committed to changing outcomes and expectations for children and families of need in Durham. Modeled after the Harlem Childrens Zone, EDCI aims to reach this goal by creating a pipeline of high-quality services that starts with children at birth and continues through elementary, middle, and high school. EDCIs vision is for all children affiliated with EDCI to graduate from high school, ready for college or career.
To provide a pipeline of high-quality services for the children of East Durham. EDCI develops and implements a systematic continuum of academic, mentoring, workplace, and family support programs for Durham youth which maximizes the use of resources.
Community and Summer Programs: EDCIs community and summer programs include the EDCI Summer Lunch program, English as a Second Language classes, bike and book giveaways, and a variety of summer and spring break camps. EDCI also offers year-round out-of-school learning programs to students in grades K-8 in partnership with various education providers throughout the Triangle. EDCI provided summer camp scholarships and opportunities to more than 350 young people and served over 20,490 meals to children and adults as part of the EDCI Summer Lunch program. Students attending any of the three EDCI summer camps made learning gains in literacy. More than 60 students participated in the Youth Leadership Council, a health and youth leadership program. YLC engaged more than 300 community members in health focused programs including mobile markets and taste testings.
Early Childhood & Middle Years: EDCI offers a variety of services for families with children ages 0-5, including a low-cost, half-day, bilingual preschool (EDCI LEAP Academy); EDCI Early Childhood Parent Advocates; literacy interventions (Story Hour); childcare subsidies; kindergarten readiness programs; and home visiting programs. In FY19, 100% of graduating Academy preschoolers were assessed as kindergarten ready, and 96% of children working with an Early Childhood Parent Advocate demonstrated developmentally appropriate communication, motor, and social interaction skills. A survey of kindergarten teachers at Y.E. Smith Elementary found that children with an Early Childhood Parent Advocate had better reading skills when leaving kindergarten than children without an Advocate. EDCI Middle Years Family Advocates facilitate the parent-teacher-school connection for families, with a strong focus on empowering parents to become effective advocates for their childrens educational success. In FY19, three EDCI Family Advocates worked alongside families to connect them to community resources, provide behavioral and educational supports, and create positive home environments.
Advocate Program: The Advocate program is designed to help middle school and high school students develop critical academic and social skills necessary for school success. The Youth Advocates facilitate communication between home and school, provide in-school support to students, and connect youth and families to programs within the EDCI pipeline. Each Youth Advocate works with students but also alongside families to connect to them to needed resources. In FY19, EDCI served over 200 middle and high school students.
