Protection of bonobo apes
Support to Amis des Bonobos du Congo (ABC) association in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which rescues and rehabilitates orphan bonobos at Lola ya bonobo sanctuary; reintroduces groups of rehabilitated bonobos in a specially established community reserve at Ekolo ya bonobo; and engages in local conservation education programs and in community development activities for sustainable bonobo protection. A total of 18 grants were made to ABC during 2019, including direct payment of consultant fees and other program costs on behalf of ABC, as well as a pass-through contribution to a Rainforest Trust grant to ABC.
Raise awareness and educate the public about the plight of bonobos in the US and internationally. Significant accomplishments include: 1. Growth of over 2900% of public and international reach of bonobo videos; 2. Growth of over 226% on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram); 3. Production of over 50 videos about bonobos and the program work of Amis des Bonobos du Congo; 4. Exhibitions at two major wildlife conferences in the US; 5. Collaboration with international media production teams to produce film, TV and radio shows about bonobos and their plight; 6. Collaboration with online media production company, the Dodo, to produce viral bonobo video; 7. Development of blue chip media opportunities to publicize and widely promote awareness and understanding of bonobos, including media outlets producing films, television series, and radio broadcasts; 8. Organization of private and public speaking events for ABC Founder Ms. Claudine Andre in the US; 9. Website updates at www.lolayabonobo.org
