The Institute for Southern Studies uses research, media, and education to promote a more just, democratic and sustainable future in the South.
Research, Reporting and Education: 2019 projects and accomplishments included: 1) Facing South online, which published daily reporting at the www.facingsouth.org website and delivered weekly email newsletters to more than 20,000 readers; 2) The Democracy Program, which tracked the growing influence of money in politics, investigated threats to voting rights and monitored issues affecting judicial independence; 3) The Southern Strategies Program, which documented the shifting demographic and political landscape of the South, through presentations at state, regional and national events and conducting research and analysis for regional and national partners; and, 4) The Julian Bond Fellowship program, a new initiative to train and support public interest journalists and researchers.
Project Incubation: In 2019 the Institute sponsored the Southern Working Group, a group of leaders interested in building social justice infrastructure in the South. The Southern Working Group conducted analysis of civic engagement efforts in Southern states, provided webinars and other educational activities to share knowledge and resources about Southern organizing, and provided resources and support to civic engagement in Louisiana.
