TO SECURE AMERICA'S FUTURE THROUGH QUALITY EDUCATION.
HUNT-KEAN LEADERSHIP FELLOWSTHE FINAL SESSION FOR COHORT 4 OF THE HUNT-KEAN LEADERSHIP FELLOWS (HK FELLOWS) PROGRAM WAS HELD IN SEATTLE, WA IN AUGUST 2018. FIFTEEN HK FELLOWS AND FIVE HK FELLOWS ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS ATTENDED AND DISCUSSED TOPICS SUCH AS MEASURING TEACHER EFFECTIVENESS, TEACHER PREPARATION, AND COMPENSATION. COHORT 5 LAUNCHED IN DECEMBER 2018 WITH HK FELLOWS COMING TOGETHER FOR THEIR FIRST MEETING IN WASHINGTON, DC. COHORT 5 WAS THE FIRST COHORT FOR WHICH THE CURRICULUM COVERED THE ENTIRE CONTINUUM, FROM PRENATAL AND EARLY CHILDHOOD TO POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION AND THE WORKFORCE. THE SESSION BEGAN WITH A DISCUSSION ON EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION, INCLUDED A SCHOOL VISIT TO TWO RIVERS PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL, AND CONCLUDED WITH DISCUSSIONS ABOUT SCHOOL CHOICE, SCHOOL FUNDING AND TEACHER EFFECTIVENESS. THROUGHOUT SPRING 2019, HUNT-KEAN LEADERSHIP FELLOWS FROM ALL COHORTS AND THEIR STAFF WERE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN MONTHLY WEBINARS TO DIG DEEPER INTO SPECIFIC POLICY AREAS SUCH AS STATE EVERY STUDENT SUCCEEDS ACT PLANS, TEACHER PENSIONS, AND SCHOOL LEADERSHIP. HK FELLOWS WERE ALSO OFFERED IN-STATE SESSIONS WITH THE HUNT INSTITUTE STAFF TO DISCUSS THEIR STATE'S EDUCATION LANDSCAPE AND POLITICAL CONTEXT IN GREATER DETAIL. IN JUNE 2019, THE INSTITUTE TOOK A GROUP OF HK FELLOWS AND STATE LEGISLATORS TO VISIT EDUCARE NEW ORLEANS IN NEW ORLEANS, LA. IN MARCH 2019, THE HUNT INSTITUTE HOSTED THE HUNT-KEAN LEADERSHIP FELLOWS HIGHER EDUCATION SUMMIT, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DUKE UNIVERSITY'S SANFORD SCHOOL FOR PUBLIC POLICY. DEVELOPED TO ALLOW THE INSTITUTE TO DIVE DEEPER ON POSTSECONDARY POLICY ISSUES WITH HK FELLOWS, THE SUMMIT CONVENED 15 HK FELLOWS (FROM COHORTS 1-5), SIX FORMER GOVERNORS, CONTENT EXPERTS, AND PRACTITIONERS FOR A DAY AND A HALF OF ENGAGING DISCUSSIONS ABOUT A VARIETY OF HIGHER EDUCATION POLICY TOPICS.
STATE ENGAGEMENTTHE HUNT INSTITUTE ENGAGED NORTH CAROLINA POLICYMAKERS AND STAKEHOLDERS IN A SERIES OF CONVENINGS THROUGHOUT 2019. THE EDUCATION POLICY RETREAT (EPR), HELD IN JANUARY 2019, SPECIFICALLY TARGETED THE INCOMING CLASS OF LEGISLATORS. BUILDING UPON THE EPR, THE INSTITUTE HOSTED THREE ADDITIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR NORTH CAROLINA LEGISLATORS AND STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING: A POLICY DINNER DISCUSSING NORTH CAROLINA'S SCHOOL PERFORMANCE GRADE SYSTEM WITH DR. CHRISTY HOVANETZ FROM EXCELINED; A REGIONAL VISIT TO WAKE EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL, HIGHLIGHTING THE ROLE EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOLS PLAY IN PROMOTING POSTSECONDARY COMPLETION; AND A POLICY BREAKFAST TO DISCUSS THE IMPACT OF PENSIONS ON TEACHER RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION IN NORTH CAROLINA. NORTH CAROLINA LEGISLATORS ALSO PARTICIPATED IN THE AFOREMENTIONED VISIT TO EDUCARE NEW ORLEANS IN JUNE 2019. ADDITIONALLY, THE INSTITUTE CONTINUED ITS COMMUNICATION SUPPORT OF MYFUTURENC, INCLUDING THE ADOPTION OF A STATEWIDE EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT GOAL FOR NORTH CAROLINA AND RELEASED A POLICY BRIEF, CONNECTING THE CONTINUUM: LONGITUDINAL DATA SYSTEMS IN NORTH CAROLINA, WHICH HIGHLIGHTED THE ADVANTAGES OF STATE LONGITUDINAL DATA SYSTEMS AND NEXT STEPS FOR POLICYMAKERS INTERESTED IN ASSESSING THE STATUS OF NORTH CAROLINA'S DATA SYSTEM.THE HUNT INSTITUTE ALSO CONTINUED ITS ENGAGEMENT IN VIRGINIA AND WEST VIRGINIA, HOSTING ITS 4TH ANNUAL VIRGINIA EDUCATION SUMMIT IN OCTOBER 2018 IN RICHMOND, VA AND A POLICY DINNER FOR VIRGINIA LEGISLATORS ON TEACHER PENSIONS. THE INSTITUTE WAS CALLED UPON BY NEWLY APPOINTED VIRGINIA SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION, DR. JAMES LANE, TO HELP DEVELOP AND LEAD THE VIRGINIA IS FOR LEARNERS ADVISORY COMMITTEE. THE COMMITTEE'S ACTIVITIES CULMINATED IN A FINAL REPORT, OUTLINING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DR. LANE'S NEW ADMINISTRATION. THE REPORT WAS PRESENTED TO THE BOARD OF EDUCATION IN FEBRUARY 2019. IN WEST VIRGINIA, THE INSTITUTE'S DIRECTOR OF POLICY & RESEARCH, PATRICK SIMS, PROVIDED REMARKS AT THE WEST VIRGINIA PUBLIC EDUCATION COLLABORATIVE'S (WVPEC) ANNUAL LEGISLATORS FORUM IN DECEMBER 2018. HE SPOKE ABOUT THE VALUE OF CRITICAL NONPARTISAN CONVERSATIONS AND OFFERED SUPPORT TO WEST VIRGINIA LEGISLATORS AS THEY TACKLE THE CHALLENGING EDUCATION ISSUES FACING WEST VIRGINIA'S STUDENTS.EXPANDING THE STATE LEGISLATIVE RETREAT MODEL INTO A FOURTH STATE, THE HUNT INSTITUTE HOSTED ITS FIRST MISSOURI LEGISLATORS RETREAT IN JEFFERSON CITY, MO IN JANUARY 2019. THE EXPANSION WAS CHAMPIONED BY MISSOURI SECRETARY OF STATE JAY ASCHROFT WHO PARTICIPATED IN COHORT 4 OF THE HUNT-KEAN LEADERSHIP FELLOWS PROGRAM. MODELING THE INSTITUTE'S WORK WITH THE VIRGINIA IS FOR LEARNERS ADVISORY COMMITTEE, THE INSTITUTE ALSO PARTNERED WITH COMMISSIONER MARGIE VANDEVEN, MISSOURI COMMISSIONER OF ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION, TO CREATE THE COMMISSIONER'S EDUCATION POLICY COMMITTEE. AS OF JUNE 2019, THE INSTITUTE IS IN THE PROCESS OF AUTHORING A FINAL REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE'S RECOMMENDATIONS, WHICH WILL THEN BE PRESENTED TO THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION FOR APPROVAL.
CROSS-STATE TEAM ENGAGEMENT AND OTHER PROGRAMSTHE HUNT INSTITUTE CONTINUES TO RECOGNIZE THE VALUE OF FOSTERING BOTH INTER- AND INTRA-STATE LEARNING BY CONVENING STATE TEAMS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO DISCUSS TOPICS COVERING THE EDUCATION CONTINUUM.IN APRIL 2019, THE HUNT INSTITUTE HOSTED 34 STATE LEADERS IN WASHINGTON, DC FOR THE 2019 EDUCATION RETREAT: ADVANCING CROSS-STATE CONVERSATIONS. BUILDING INTO AND TACKING ONTO THE END OF THE REAGAN INSTITUTE SUMMIT ON EDUCATION (RISE), 15 STATES WERE REPRESENTED WITH STATE TEAM MEMBERS INCLUDING GOVERNORS' ADVISORS/POLICY DIRECTORS, STATE CHIEFS, HIGHER EDUCATION LEADERS, LEGISLATORS, AND OTHERS.AS FOLLOW UP TO THE HUNT INSTITUTE'S JUNE 2018 PRENATAL TO THREE YEARS SUMMIT, CREATED AND DELIVERED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BUILD INITIATIVE, A SECOND CO-BRANDED CONVENING WAS HOSTED IN JUNE 2019 IN NEW ORLEANS, LA. TITLED 2019 EARLY CHILDHOOD LEADERSHIP SUMMIT, THE SUMMIT WAS HELD IN ADVANCE OF BUILD'S 2019 QUALITY RATING AND IMPROVEMENT SYSTEMS CONFERENCE AND FEATURED STATE TEAMS FROM ACROSS THE NATION, INCLUDING TEAMS FROM ARKANSAS, IDAHO, MAINE, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NORTH CAROLINA, SOUTH CAROLINA, AND VIRGINIA, AMONG OTHERS. IN KEEPING WITH THE INSTITUTE'S MISSION TO SUPPORT ELECTED OFFICIALS ON ISSUES OF EDUCATION REFORM, THE 2019 SUMMIT WAS DESIGNED TO ENGAGE MORE MEMBERS OF THE INSTITUTE'S CORE AUDIENCE OF ELECTED OFFICIALS IN UNDERSTANDING THE CRITICAL IMPORTANCE OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND THE SYSTEMS THAT SUPPORT YOUNG CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES. STATE TEAMS INCLUDING GOVERNORS' REPRESENTATIVES, KEY STATE LAWMAKERS, HUNT-KEAN LEADERSHIP FELLOWS, EARLY CHILDHOOD SYSTEM LEADERS, AND PRIVATE/PHILANTHROPIC FUNDERS. STATE TEAMS LEFT THE SUMMIT WITH A SET OF EARLY CHILDHOOD SYSTEM GOALS FOR THEIR STATES.THE HUNT INSTITUTE HAS ALSO BEEN INTENTIONAL ABOUT CONTINUING TO ENHANCE ITS BRAND AND NATIONAL PRESENCE, CONTINUING THE INTERSECTION BLOG AND BIWEEKLY WEBINAR SERIES, AND DEPLOYING STAFF TO AND HOSTING SESSIONS AT PARTNER CONVENINGS SUCH AS COUNCIL OF CHIEF STATE SCHOOL OFFICERS' THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON STUDENT ASSESSMENT, EDUCATION COMMISSION OF THE STATES NATIONAL FORUM ON EDUCATION POLICY, STATE HIGHER EDUCATION EXECUTIVE OFFICERS' HIGHER EDUCATION POLICY CONFERENCE, NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF STATE LEGISLATURES' LEGISLATIVE SUMMIT, AMERICAN ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE'S BRIDGING THE DIVIDE SUMMIT, AND THE CENTER ON ENHANCING EARLY LEARNING OUTCOMES ROUNDTABLE CONFERENCE.
