We are committed to improving the quality of life for LGBTQ+ people in and around Durham: through programming, resources, and networks of support; by acting as a hub for Durham's LGBTQ+ community; by sharing and affirming all LGBTQ+ lived experiences; and, by educating our neighbors in order to enhance understanding of and sensitivity to LGBTQ+ issues.
To create a community where all LGBTQ+ lived experiences are affirmed, supported, and celebrated.
The Host Home Program officially launched with the assistance of Point Source Youth and the NC Department of Health and Human services. With this, we were able to hire our first full-time staff for the program. Later, we hired our first full-time executive director which has given us the opportunity to streamline and elevate all of our programs. The Host Home Program truly flourished in 2019. We saw the creation of the program and the first youth to engage with the program were also able to cycle through. We remain committed to the program and have added structures to help facilitate successful intake and graduation from the program. We have built connections with many local agencies to help with survivorship, job placement, and other support programs.
Community Engagement & Social Events: In 2019, we saw increased success with Pride: Durham, NC going into its second year. We were able to provide more programming and center the experiences of queer and trans people of color. We were able to hire national performance acts to entertain the people of Durham. In addition, we hosted several pot lucks, educational programs, and fundraisers.
Providing Education & Resources to the LGBTQ+ Community: The Center remains firm in its commitment to supporting our trans siblings seeking official name changes and finding gender-affirming clothing. To that end, in 2019 we launched the Name Change Navigator Program. In addition, we expanded the Trans and Gender Nonconforming Closet to include special days that are open to the public. This elevated the status of the program and ensured greater attendance.
