Organizations Filed Purposes:
Serving as a funding and support agency exclusively for theater companies and artists in the Triangle area.
Program 1) Theater Grants Initiative to support Triangle theater projects in the 2019-20 season. Processed theater grant applications, assembled an independent panel to evaluate the applications and allocate awards, which were then approved by the Manbites Dog Theater board of directors. 25 grants were awarded in the first quarter of 2019-20, totaling $38,150. (Two grant projects were subsequently canceled by the artists and $3,000 in funds were returned. Some projects have been postponed due to the COViD pandemic.)
Program 2) Ann Atwater Theater Awards. In January, MDT solicited nominations for awards to Triangle theater artists and companies whose body of work whose body of work reflects and honors Durham civil rights activist Ann Atwaters lifelong commitment to activism for social justice. The MDT board of directors chose 6 recipients to receive trophies and unrestricted grants of $4,000 each, which were awarded in April.
Program 3) COVID Emergency funding grants. In March. we provided funding assistance grants ranging from $2,000 to $3,000, for a total of $12,000, to five Triangle area organizations making emergency grants to artists in need.
