MDC (FORMERLY MANPOWER DEVELOPMENT CORP.) WAS FOUNDED IN 1967 TO HELP NORTH CAROLINA MAKE THE TRANSITION FROM AN AGRICULTURAL TO AN INDUSTRIAL ECONOMY AND FROM A SEGREGATED TO AN INTEGRATED WORKFORCE. IT HAS EVOLVED INTO A RESEARCH AND HANDS-ON PARTNER THAT EQUIPS SOUTHERN LEADERS, INSTITUTIONS AND COMMUNITIES TO IMPROVE ECONOMIC MOBILITY AND ADVANCE EQUALITY. FOR 50 YEARS, MDC HAS BEEN CLEARING THE PATHWAYS THAT LEAD TO OPPORTUNITY BY WORKING WITH FOUNDATIONS, NONPROFITS, AND COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS LEADERS, PRIMARILY IN THE SOUTH, TO CREATE SYSTEMIC CHANGE THAT ALLOWS ALL PEOPLE-INCLUDING THOSE STUCK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE INCOME LADDER-TO CONNECT WITH EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT, AND ECONOMIC SECURITY. WE CENTER OUR WORK ON BUILDING AND STRENGTHENING THE "INFRASTRUCTURE OF OPPORTUNITY"-THE SET OF SYSTEMS AND SUPPORTS OFTEN PRESENT IN MANY COMMUNITIES THAT, ONCE ALIGNED, CAN BOOST YOUNG PEOPLE TO HIGHER RUNGS ON THE ECONOMIC LADDER.

POSTSECONDARY ATTAINMENT - MDC SUPPORTS STATEWIDE EFFORTS TO ADVANCE POSTSECONDARY ATTAINMENT. IN NORTH CAROLINA, MDC SERVED AS A PARTNER, ADVISOR, AND FACILITATOR OF WORKING COMMUNITTEES OF MYFUTURENC, A STATEWIDE COMMISSION ON EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT. IN MISSISSIPPI, MDC SUPPORTS THE WOODWARD HINES EDUCATION FOUNDATION IN ITS ROLE AS A STATEWIDE EDUCATION LEADER COMMITTED TO IMPROVING POSTSECONDARY ATTAINMENT PRACTICE AND POLICY.EARLY CHILDHOOD SYSTEMS CHANGE - MDC IS WORKING WITH KATE B. REYNOLDS CHARITABLE TRUST AS THE ACTIVATING AGENCY FOR ITS GREAT EXPECTATIONS INITIATIVE TO GIVE THE CHILDREN OF FORSYTH COUNTY, NC, THE FOUNDATION NECESSARY TO SUCCEED IN SCHOOL AND LIFE BY THE TIME THEY COMPLETE KINDERGARDEN, REGARDLESS OF THEIR FAMILY'S INCOME. MDC PROVIDES STRATEGIC DIRECTION AND SUPPORTS COMMUNITY-BASED PLANNING AND ENGAGEMENT IN SHAPING STRATEGIC INVESTMENTS FOCUSED ON SYSTEMS CHANGE, ALL UNDERGIRDED BY FAMILY AND PARENT ENGAGEMENT. MDC ALSO IS WORKING WITH THE OAK FOUNDATION TO BUILD "LEARNING FOR EQUITY: A NETWORK FOR SOLUTIONS, OR LENS-NC. NINE NORTH CAROLINA ORGANIZATIONS FOCUSED ON EDUCATION, DISABILITY RIGHTS, ACTIVISM, LATINO ISSUES, AND RURAL COMMUNITIES ARE WORKING TOGETHER TO ADVANCE THEIR WORK AT THE INTERSECTION OF RACE, EDUCATIONAL EQUITY, AND LEARNING DIFFERENCES.
ECONOMIC MOBILITY - THE NETWORK FOR SOUTHERN ECONOMIC MOBILITY IS A GROUP OF SOUTHERN COMMUNITIES COMMITTED TO INCREASING UPWARD ECONOMIC MOBILITY FOR YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS IN THE LOWEST INCOME BRACKETS. THE NETWORK HELPS COMMUNITIES DEEPEN, ACCELERATE, AND ALIGN POLICY AND PRACTICE FOR SYSTEMIC CHANGE THAT POSITION THESE YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS FOR ECONOMIC SUCCESS.FAMILY ECONOMIC SECURITY - RECOGNIZING THAT ECONOMIC INSECURITY IS A MAJOR BARRIER FOR FAMILIES TRYING TO MOVE UP THE ECONOMIC LADDER, MDC IS HELPING COMMUNITIES DEVELOP NETWORKS OF NONPROFIT AND PUBLIC SOCIAL SERVICES PROVIDERS TO EMPOWER FAMILIES TO ACHIEVE MAJOR ECONOMIC OUTCOMES--INCREASED LEVELS OF EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT, FAMILY-SUSTAINING INCOME, AND FINANCIAL STABILITY. USING THE TWO GENERATION INTEGRATED SERVICES DELIVERY (ISD) APPROACH TO BUNDLE, SEQUENCE, AND DELIVER SOCIAL SERVICES, COMMUNITY-WIDE NETWORKS CREATE EFFICIENCIES AND PRODUCE OUTCOMES THAT ALSO IMPROVE SOCIAL DETERMINATES OF CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT AND HEALTH. MDC IS PARTNERING WITH UNITED WAY OF GREATER GREENSBORO AND COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDERS TO PILOT THE FIRST ISD NETWORK IN GUILFORD COUNTY, NC. MDC ALSO IS PART OF THE LEARNING INITIATIVE RURALEAD: STRENGTHENING LEADERSHIP TO TRANSFORM RURAL COMMUNITIES. COORDINATED BY RURAL DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES WITH SUPPORT PROVIDED BY THE ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON FOUNDATION, THE INITIATIVE INCLUDES MULTIPLE REGIONAL PARTNERS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES WORKING TO EXPLORE A BROAD DEFINITION OF RURAL LEADERSHIP AND TO ELEVATE LEADERS, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PRACTITIONERS, FUNDERS, AND OTHERS INTERESTED IN CREATING A RURAL AMERICA WHERE ALL PEOPLE CAN THRIVE.
PASSING GEAR PHILANTHROPY - SINCE 2003 MDC HAS WORKED WITH PLACE-BASED COMMUNITY AND PRIVATE FOUNDATIONS TO HELP THEM REFOCUS THEIR PHILANTHROPIC PROGRAM SERVICES TO ADDRESS THE "UPSTREAM CAUSES" OF SOCIAL INEQUALITIES AND PERFORMANCE GAPS IN EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT, ASSET LEVELS, AND HEALTH USING A SIGNATURE METHODOLOGY CALLED PASSING GEAR PHILANTHROPY. IN 2020, MDC IS HOLDING ITS FIRST PASSING GEAR PHILANTHROPY INSTITUTE OF ANNUAL COHORTS OF FOUNDATIONS, CREATING A NETWORK THAT WILL HELP SOUTHERN PHILANTHROPY BUILD A MORE EQUITABLE FUTURE.
