The Society for Translational Oncology, ("STO") brings knowledge and strategies for critical new developments in cancer treatment to the practice of the community oncologist. To achieve that end, STO provides publications, meetings, and enduring materials that serve to shorten the "translational gap" between discovery and translation of important new treatments in the field of cancer medicine to the practice of global oncology in order to improve patient care. STO also supports the preparation and publication of peer-accepted manuscripts that advance an understanding of the nature of malignancy and that foster better clinical outcomes for cancer patients. In short, STO is an educational association for the continued education of its membership and of cancer caregivers.
Promote education of oncologists by providing publications, meetings, and enduring materials that serve to shorten the "translational gap" between discovery and deployment of new treatments to improve patient care. The foundation of STO's educational interventions is the improvement of physician competencies and strategies for the screening, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with cancer; and enhancement of performance-in-practice. STO is a non-profit, professional association dedicated to the continued education of its members and cancer caregivers, and to improvement in the quality and safety of care for the patient with cancer. The educational content of STO focuses on medical, radiation, and surgical oncology. Education is disseminated through live conferences, workshops, internet webcasts and journal-based articles. Its audience is comprised of medical, radiation and surgical oncologists, nurses, researchers and other health professionals.
STO's purpose is to provide a high-quality educational program that improves health care by bringing information on the latest treatments for cancer as quickly as possible to physicians everywhere. This makes cutting-edge care more widely available than if the information was only known at the large research medical centers. The corporation carries out its educational program in connection with a medical publication called 'The Oncologist' to physicians who join STO as members. Membership is open to any oncologist or anyone otherwise professionally involved with oncology. 'The Oncologist' is an international print and online peer-reviewed journal devoted to medical and practice issues for those entrusted with the care of cancer patients. Now in the nineteeth year of publication, 'The Oncologist' is recognized in the field as the premier medical journal for oncology. The journal is published at least 12 times per year and approximately 20% of the articles are selected to be the basis for a Continuing Medical Education ("CME") program. The author of selected peer-accepted articles and the editors of 'The Oncologist' prepare a web-based education program that provides study guides, test the physicians' comprehension of the article and reinforces the medical information in the article. By completing an online questionnaire, the physician can receive CME credits. In the past, 'The Oncologist' CME online program has been sponsored with the National Institutes of Health ("NIH") and with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ("UNC"). Both NIH and UNC were accredited providers of CME. STO was provisionally accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education ("ACCME") as a provider of CME for physicians in 2008. In 2009 the STO began the self-study portion of the reaccreditation process which was completed in late 2010. In 2011, STO was awarded full accreditation by the ACCME for 4 years. This process is time-consuming and work-intensive. The yearlong project includes a thorough examination and review of the quality of the educational materials being offered.By making the articles available via the internet and mobile apps, physicians in all parts of the country and globally learn about the newest treatments for cancer and obtain CME credits. Thus, STO is providing up-to-date information to physicians in communities where there is not a cancer center. This outreach improves the quality of care available to the many cancer patients who are treated outside the major medical research centers. STO conducts follow-up with the physicians who complete the educational programs to learn if the information was of use to the physician and how the physician implemented the materials into practice. In October 2013, STO endeavored to conduct its fourth live annual meeting in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The Fourth Annual STO meeting was jointly sponsored by Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the Society for Translational Oncology and in partnership with STO's official journal, 'The Oncologist.'This unique conference was attended by over 100 physician-scientists and clinical investigators. It offered an intimate look at some of the best clinical research and its application to clinical practice, and in local biotechs and industry. Speakers covered a range of topics from basic research to cutting-edge clinical trials.
In 2009, STO became the new sponsor and steward of the Dr. H. M. (Bob) Pinedo Cancer Care Prize. The Pinedo Prize is awarded annually to an individual whose significant contributions to cancer research, education and improvements in the care of cancer patients deserve recognition. The prize consists of a 50,000 Dollar award and a bronze statue in the form of one of Pinedo's hands, symbolizing strength and hope of healing. STO awarded the 2013 Bob Pinedo Cancer Care Prize to Dr. Patrick G Johnston MD, PhD of the Queen's University Belfast of Northern Ireland, at its annual meeting in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Dr. Johnston was awarded the prize for his life-long dedication to cancer patients and his pioneering progress in bringing new hope to colorectal cancer patients. In honor of his award, Dr. Johnston delivered the keynote lecture, "Translational Cancer Medicine: A Journey from Concept to Reality from Bethesda to Belfast" at the STO Annual Meeeting on October 1, 2013.The Bob Pinedo Prize was created to inspire others to follow in his footsteps so that his legacy may continue to live and have impact, with the compassion and integrity that he has manifested throughout his career. STO is honored to become heir to The Pinedo Prize taking up its administration and its annual recognition.
In 2013, STO continued to develop and support web-based learning by highlighting uniquely valuable video presentations for practicing oncologists. Located at www.sto-online.org or through the collaborative website created in concert with STO's official Journal, 'The Oncologist' at http://www.theoncologist.com, the website serves as the focus for STO's state-of-the-art educational initiatives. The on-demand media library is the centerpiece of the updated website. It hosts a variety of timely presentations from world-class physician-scientists who have helped transform the way oncology should be practiced. Presentations were recorded at live meetings in the US and Europe. All presentations are available free of charge and on demand to registered users on The Oncologist website. The website is produced in collaboration with 'The Oncologist,' the official journal of the STO. Membership in the Society includes unlimited on-line access to this premier oncology publication and registration for its annual meeting which began in 2010.
