The Blue Ridge Humane Society, a nonprofit, limited admission animal welfare organization, who is dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of life for animals in Henderson County and our neighboring communities through adoption, outreach, and education. In 2019 1,397 animals were adopted out from there shelter. 965 of these animals were rescued from Henderson County Animal Services, while the remainder came from neighboring counties including, Buncombe and Transylvania.
The Blue Ridge Humane Society is committed to proper and reasonable animal care. The organization stresses the importance of spay/neuter education through many venues. 760 animals were altered before being adopted out in 2019. In addition, their Spay/Neuter Incentive program (SNIP) allows residents of Henderson County to have their animals spayed or neutered for $10. In 2019 1,667 public animals were altered and 1,229 animals received rabies vaccinations through the SNIP program.
The Blue Ridge Humane Society provides several community programs to keep animals in homes and out of the shelter system. They provide financial assistance for the medical treatment of animals to the general public. Individuals who qualify, receive financial assistance for heartworm, flea and tick medicine, wellness check-ups, required vaccinations, and emergency surgeries. The organization also offers community Pet Food Assistance programs that delivers pet food to local human food banks. In 2019, 19,924 pounds of pet food was delivered to local food pantries. This number includes food delivered to Meals on Wheels clients through the Meals on Wheels Pets Pals program. The program provides pet food, basic socialization, flea and tick prevention, litter, and spay/neuter services to the pets living with Meals on Wheel recipients.
