Blue Ridge Literacy Council transforms lives through improved literacy and English communication skills.
Program 1: EmployED utilizes trained volunteers to tutor adult learners in a one-on-one or small group setting who are either native or non-native English speakers. Tutoring is done in the context of the student's goal(s). Such goals can include acquiring; a high school diploma certificate, professional certifications, college entrance, citizenship, and financial stability through workplace related goals. Annually we serve 250 individuals through our tutoring program.
Program 2: Our Family Literacy program is a multi-generational English Acquisition Program for parents who have children 0-5 years of age. The program teaches parents English in the context of parenting skills and child development education while teaching the children English through educational play and ensuring the children learn pre-literacy skills. Annually we serve 40 adult participants and approximately 45 children.
Program 3: Our Senior Literacy program provides digital literacy and medicare information workshops to elders. Small groups are facilitated by trained volunteers. Also, our Youth Literacy program serves at-risk youth by providing tutors to help them with academic skills and journaling workshops to improve social-emotional behavior.
