Organizations Filed Purposes:
The mission of El Centro is to create a more inclusive community for Latinos by providing unique services, developing grassroots leaders, and working together to access community resources.
LAC is a grassroots nonprofit organization, formed in May of 1998 to address the many challenges that accompany the increasing numbers of Latino immigrants to Western North Carolina. Adult Literacy Program Core Value Education -providing opportunities for Spanish speakers to develop their critical consciousness. We work to empower people who feel marginalized, socially and politically, to take control of their own learning and to effect social change while developing basic literacy skills. The Adult Literacy Program includes the following programs: HiSET - High School Equivalency (Formerly GED) Preparation in Spanish This is a five month preparation course where students study writing, social studies,
science, mathematics, language and arts, in preparation for the comprehensive High School Equivalency exam. Information and Referral Program This program connects Spanish speaking people who have needs to the resources available in the community. I&R programs help individuals, families and communities identify, understand and effectively use the programs that are part of the community. At the community level, I&R services facilitate long-range planning by tracking requests for service and identifying gaps and duplications in services. I&R services also work with other organizations to make them a better resource for their clients LAC Mobile Services - the Center will continue to provide outreach opportunities for our partner organizations to provide on-the-spot services to the Latino community
where they are: at flea markets, soccer fields, churches and neighborhoods. Families United Program Families United - This is a program that helps families obtain documents to ensure the safety of their children, and for adults to better understand their rights in case of deportation or separation from their families. This information enables families to self-advocate and to be informed of their rights and options under the current immigration system. Nuestro Centro is a grass roots organization that operates under LACH. Program Accomplishments for the 3 largest programs for Nuestro Centro are as follows: Over 40 children participated in the Raices Summer Camp over 3 weeks, one additional week from the 2017 pilot project. New this year, 13 "Youth Leaders" received a stipend for their help and leadership. Coordinators and Youth Leaders participated in 4 trainings on Popular Education, Racial Equity, Mindfulness, and CPR. 20 Guest Artists from our community facilitated activities on painting, podcasting, art, communications, language, dance, and more. A final Camp Celebration brought together families, Coordinators, Youth Leaders, and participants, and everyone else who helped make the camp a success. We expanded Raices program to Erwin Middle School, for a total of 3 schools participating during the 2017-2018 school year. Nuestro Centro was the lead organization for the Raices expansion, working in partnership with the students and parent leaders, as well as Buncombe County Schools. Nuestro Centro provided over 100 consultations through our "Consulta tu Compa" program, helping connect people to resources on immigration, employment, ESL classes, tenants' rights, discrimination, health, translations, housing, wage theft, traffic tickets, passports for dual citizenship, contacts with the US Embassy and Mexican consulate, and more.
