The mission of the Highlands Biological Foundation is to actively stimulate, promote, and support biological research and education focused on the rich natural heritage of the Highlands Plateau.
To actively promote and support biological research and education in the Southern Appalachians
Highlands Nature Center Highlands Biological Foundation operates a Nature Center with a fulltime Education Specialist who oversees a wide array of place-based, experiential learning experiences at the Highlands Nature Center, focusing on the spectacular biodiversity of the southern Appalachian region. Operating the Nature Center itself provides more than 10,000 visitors every year with the opportunity to see exhibits, meet animal ambassadors, and participatein daily programs all at no cost. Additional learning experiences include special events, summer day camps, and the annual Zahner Conservation Lecture Series, and family- based programs. The Education Specialists also provides outreach in the form of programming for organizations across Macon and Jackson counties as well as at regional events.
Support of the Highlands Biological Station Annually, support is provided to the Highlands Biological Station via research grants, capital improvements, and staff support.
Highlands Botanical Garden Highlands Biological Foundation provides funding for enhancement of the Highlands Botanical Garden, a living laboratory of over 500 species of mosses, ferns, wildflowers, shrubs and trees in a natural forest. Funds are expended on plants, hardscape, tools, training, labor, and trail maintenance. Highlands Botanical Garden is open year-round, dawn to dusk, free of charge. Visitors can explore the wildflowers along our woodland trails, lake, and creek. Several unique demonstration gardens display collections of Native Azaleas, Plants of the Cherokee, Mosses and Liverworts, Wildflower Meadow, Butterfly- pollinated and Rock Outcrop species.
