Organizations Filed Purposes:
Enrich lives and expand the knowledge of children, adults and families through diverse education programs that advance literacy in its many forms and to promote lifelong learning, which results in an informed and empowered community.
The Literacy Council reaches approximately 3,000 individuals each year through the following programs and initiatives. Dolly Parton Imagination Library: Books are delivered monthly to children under the age of 5, all free of cost to the families. Early Learners: Volunteers works with Macon County child care organizations to provide early literacy programs to our littlest learners. In-School Tutoring: Literacy volunteers work in 5 Macon County schools to bolster student's reading skills. Individual Tutoring: Available twice/week for K-12 students, in any subject. After School Enrichment: Children grades K-3 are provided homework assistance and engaging educational activities, Monday through Friday.
Homework Helpers: Students grade 4-12 meet after school for assistance with homework, papers, research, and overall comprehension of student curriculum. High School Equivalency Program (GED): Courses are offered to help students pass their GED test and to better prepare them for the workforce. English as a Second Language (ESL): Classes for children and adults from numerous native languages are designed to teach reading and writing proficiency in the English language. Adult Literacy - One on one tutoring is available for adults who want to build and/or strengthen their literacy skills. Senior Book Exchange - Large-print books are provided to senior care facilities and are exchanged with new books on a regular basis.
