CABARRUS MEALS ON WHEELS, INC. VOLUNTEERS HELP THE HOMEBOUND REMAIN INDEPENDENT BY DELIVERY OF NUTRITIOUS MEALS CONTRIBUTING TO THEIR OVERALL WELL BEING
DELIVERY OF MEALS TO HOMEBOUND RESIDENTS OF CABARRUS COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
CABARRUS MEALS ON WHEELS DELIVERS AN AVERAGE OF 400 MEALS PER DAY TO HOMEBOUND ELDERLY, FRAIL INDIVIDUALS IN CABARRUS COUNTY WHO ARE UNABLE OR RESTRICTED IN THEIR ABILITY TO PREPARE THEIR OWN MEAL. MEALS ARE DELIVERED FOR THE NOONTIME MEAL AND CONSIST OF 1/3 THE RECOMMENDED DIETARY ALLOWANCE. DURING THE 2019 FISCAL YEAR, OVER 100,000 MEALS WERE SERVED THROUGH OUT CABARRUS COUNTY TO MORE THAN 500 UNDUPLICATED HOMEBOUND ELDERLY AND DISABLED SENIORS BY CARING VOLUNTEERS.THE MEAL CONSISTS OF TWO SEPARATE CONTAINERS, ONE WITH A 4 OZ. PORTION OF PROTEIN (MEAT OR FISH), VEGETABLE AND CARBOHYDRATE. THE OTHER TRAY CONTAINS SALAD, FRUIT, AND DESSERT. ALL CLIENTS RECEIVE 1% MILK. ALL FOOD IS LOW-SODIUM, LOW-SUGAR, AND IS PREPARED FRESH DAILY IN OUR KITCHEN. MENUS ARE PREPARED BY A REGISTERED DIETITIAN AND FOLLOW GUIDELINES ESTABLISHED BY THE NORTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF AGING AND ADULT SERVICES.FROZEN MEALS ARE PROVIDED FOR THE WEEKEND FOR THOSE SENIORS WHO ARE AT MOST RISK NUTRITIONALLY AND WHO ARE MOST ISOLATED. WEEKEND FROZEN MEALS CONSIST OF A PROTEIN AND TWO VEGETABLES. THESE MEALS ARE PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE FOR 225 OF OUR CLIENTS THROUGH A GRANT. WHILE ALL CLIENTS ARE ASKED TO PAY FOR THEIR MEALS BASED ON A SLIDING SCALE BASED ON THEIR ABILITY TO PAY, MANY ARE NOT ABLE TO PAY FOR A NUTRITIOUS MEAL. 85% OF OUR CLIENTS' MEALS ARE SUDSIDIZED THROUGH CABARRUS MEALS ON WHEELS. 83% OF OUR CLIENTS RECEIVE MEALS FREE OF CHARGE. THEY LIVE ON AN AVERAGE OF $800 PER MONTH. WE ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE THE NEXT MEAL. CABARRUS MEALS ON WHEELS OFFERS SPONSORSHIPS FOR CLIENTS WHO ARE IN NEED OF A MEAL BUT UNABLE TO AFFORD ONE. SPONSORSHIP FUNDS ARE PROVIDED THROUGH VARIOUS GRANTS, FAITH BASED ORGANIZATIONS, AND INDIVIDUAL DONATIONS.MEALS ARE DELIVERED MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY ON 30 ROUTES THROUGHOUT CABARRUS COUNTY BY A LARGE GROUP OF CARING VOLUNTEERS. CABARRUS MEALS ON WHEELS RELIES ON MORE THAN 400 VOLUNTEERS EACH YEAR TO DELIVER MEALS TO MORE THAN 625 UNDUPLICATED CLIENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. VOLUNTEERS ARE INDIVIDUALS AND BUSINESSES. GROUPS ARE WELCOME TO JOIN AT ANY TIME TO ASSIST US TO SERVE ALL WHO NEED A NUTRITIOUS MEAL. WE ARE MORE THAN A MEAL. OUR VOLUNTEERS OFFER A DAILY HEALTH CHECK TO SENIORS WHO MAY NOT SEE ANOTHER PERSON FOR DAYS. WE ALSO PROVIDE CAT AND DOG FOOD, EMERGENCY GROCERIES, BIRTHDAY CAKES AND CARDS, AND SANTA ON WHEELS, OUR CHRISTMAS GIVING PROGRAM. CABARRUS MEALS ON WHEELS IS A NEED BASED ORGANIZATION. WE ARE NOT AN INCOME BASED ORGANIZATION. WE SERVE ALL QUALIFIED PEOPLE REGARDLESS OF THEIR ABILITY OR INABILITY TO PAY FOR A MEAL. IF SOMEONE NEEDS A MEAL, WE ARE HERE TO PROVIDE THAT MEAL. IT IS OUR HOPE TO END SENIOR HUNGER IN CABARRUS COUNTY.
