Organizations Filed Purposes: We had two very successful one week sleepover STEM camps that had made it possible for more girls to attend a camp than the preceding year. Each girl attended one 12 hour class of their choice and eight workshops that introduced them to other STEM fields. The girls especially enjoyed working in pairs and on special projects, dining with women STEM professionals who answered the girls questions and and then listening to a panel discussion among these women. On Friday all the girls had a guided tour of an interesting nearby STEM facility. The post camp surveys showed that the girls enjoyed meeting and working with girls with similar interests. According to their parents the girls learned more about STEM fields and careers during the week and matured significantly because of their opportunity to assume leadship roles.

The organization is organized for charitable and educational purposes in order to advance equity for women and girls by supporting projects of AAUW Florida that also advance equity for women and girls and qualify as non-profit tax exempt organizations under the Internal Revenue Service Code. This year the organization sponsored two one week STEM camps for girls entering the 7th grade in the fall. Girls were nominaed by Math and Science teachers. Girls applied, were interviewed and selected to attend camp. Each girl attended a 12 hour course such as robotics, enginering, marine biology, etc. They also attended 8 workshops, attended a panel discussion led by STEM career women. The girls lived in college dorms, ate in the cafeteria, and used campus classrooms and labs. Friday the girls visited a nearby STEM facility. The camp was free except for a small registration fee.

We raised enough money through contributions and small grants to pay all the camp expenses for all 96 girls except for a $50 registration fee. The girls were given t-shirts, flash drives, journals, water bottles and backpacks. None of the girls knew each other before they came to camp. The program accomplishments were the same at both camps. All girls attended one 12 hour core course and 8 workshops. These activities introduced them to nine different STEM fields. They learned to share dorm rooms with perfect strangers, to share and work together in pairs on special projects. Some of the girls learned how to operate and use ipads for the first time and learned tasks that could be accomplished on an ipad. They left knowing about STEM educational requirements, possible STEM careers and about life on a college campus from their counselors who were all college students. They also learned that there were girls in multiple locations in Florida who had the same academic interests as they did. Many of the girls did not know other girls their age with similar interests. In all the girls found that the camp was a very rewarding and interesting experience.
