Organizations Filed Purposes:
SHF provides practical information about canine behavior to shelter & rescue personnel, veterinarians, boarding staff and trainers, so they can better help dog-owners. This outreach is done via conferences (some of which were cancelled this year due to COVID), and via a book and online videos created for the purpose. SHF volunteers also care for a group of sanctuary animals (turtles, cats, goats & dogs) and they occasionally rescue, rehab and rehome at-risk dogs.
Our volunteers aim to keep dogs in good homes and out of shelters by increasing the handling skills of the people around them. We also serve as a sanctuary for freshwater turtles and several dogs, cats & goats.
Canine behavior outreach and education via SHF's SMILE! Project. SHF volunteers were scheduled to teach at 2 conferences, 2 shelter/rescue trainings and 2 dog shows that were cancelled due to COVID. Instead, we taught at 2 online/virtual conferences and developed 6 Youtube video trainings in behavior for dog rescuers and owners. Our canine behavior book sales raised funds to care for SHF's sanctuary animals.
Animal care, farm maintenance and community asset development at Safe Harbor Farm. SHF is home, at any time, to 20-30 dogs, cats, goats and birds, plus hundreds of freshwater turtles. Its 61+ acres boasts a 1-acre dog park and 1.5 miles of nature trails slated to be groomed for community use in 2021.
