Organizations Filed Purposes: PART 1, LINE 1, CONTINUED - WE PROVIDE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE COLLEGIATE BOUND STUDENT, RECOGNITION OF AUTHORS OF OUTSTANDING LITERARY WORKS, AND ENCOURAGE LOYALTY TO THE CONSITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES.

THE SOCIETY IS A LITERARY, HISTORICAL, BENEVOLENT, EDUCATIONAL, AND NON- POLITICAL ORGANIZATION THAT SEEKS TO CULTIVATE THE TIES OF FRIENDSHIP AMONG THE RELATIVES OF THE CONFERERATE OFFICER CORPS AND TO PROVIDE LEADERSHIP IN THE COLLECTING AND ASSEMBLING OF DATA, DOCUMENTS AND MATERIALS RELATING TO THE CONFEDERACY. MOS&B SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IS AWARDED ANNUALLY TO GENEALOGICALLY PROVEN DECENDENTS OF CONFEDERATE OFFICERS OR MEMBERS OF THE CONFEDERATE GOVERNMENT. PRIORITY IS GIVEN TO STUDENTS MATRICULATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL TO COLLEGE. APPLICATIONS ARE SUBMITTED BY MARCH IST OF EACH YEAR TO THE SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE. UP TO SIX SCHOLARSHIPS OF $1000 EACH ARE AWARDED ANNUALLY PROVIDED THERE ARE ENOUGH QUALIFIED CANDIDATES IN THE POOL. APPLICANTS MUST BE ENROLLED IN AN ACCREDITED DEGREE-GRANTING TWO OR FOUR YEAR COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY INSTITUTION BEFORE FUNDS ARE DISBURSED. SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS ARE PLACED ON DEPOSIT AT THE INSTITUTION WHERE THE PERSON IS ENROLLED FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE AWARDEE. AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS ARE FOR ONE YEAR ONLY. THE MOS&B ALSO OCCASIONALLY PROVIDES SMALL GRANTS IN SUPPORT OF HISTORICAL PRESERVATION AND OTHER PROJECTS RELATED TO HERITAGE PRESERVATION. THESE GRANTS ARE TYPICALLY UNDER $1,000. IN 2019 A $600 HISTORICAL PRESERVATION GRANT WAS MADE.

MOS&B LITERARY AWARDS ARE AWARDED ANNUALLY TO WHEN QUALIFIED RECIPIENTS ARE NOMINATED. THE DOUGLAS SOUTHALL FREEMAN HISTORY AWARD FOR THE BEST PUBLISHED BOOK OF HIGH MERIT IN THE FIELD OF SOUTHERN HISTORY BEGINNING WITH THE COLONIAL PERIOD TO THE PRESENT TIME; THE RANDALL BRACKIN JONES HISTORY TEACHER OF THE YEAR IS GIVEN TO AN OUTSTANDING HISTORY TEACHER WHO HAS BEEN NOMINATED BY A MEMBER; THE JOHN ESTEN COOKE FICTION AWARD FOR THE BEST PUBLISHED BOOK OF FICTION THAT PORTRAYS CHARACTERS AND EVENTS DEALING WITH THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES, CONFEDERATE HERITAGE OR SOUTHERN HISTORY IN AN HISTORICALLY ACCURATE FASHION, AND THE GENERAL BASIL W. DUKE AWARD FOR THE BEST RE-ISSUANCE OF OUT-OF PRINT BOOKS THAT ACCURATELY PRESENT THE HISTORY OF THE WAR FOR SOUTHERN INDEPENDENCE. EACH AWARD RECIPIENT RECEIVES A CHECK AND AN APPROPRIATE TROPHY. THE FREEMAN AND COOKE AWARDS ARE PRESENTED TO THE AUTHOR. THE JONES AWARD IS PRESENTED TO THE TEACHER. THE FREEMAN AWARD HAS BEEN GIVEN SINCE 1989, THE JONES AWARD BEGINNING IN 2014, THE COOKE AWARD SINCE 1989 AND THE DUKE AWARD SINCE 1997. IN 2019, $3500 WAS AWARDED TO FOUR RECIPIENTS FOR THE FREEMAN, JONES, COOKE AND DUKE AWARDS.

MOS&B AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL PROVIDES SEVERAL SERVICES TO ITS MEMBERS. THE MOS&B PUBLISHES AN OFFICER'S CALL MAGAZINE 4 TIMES EACH YEAR. THE MAGAZINE IS SENT TO ACTIVE MEMBERS AND PUBLISHES ARTICLES ON CURRENT EVENTS ACROSS THE ORGANIZATION, HISTORICAL ARTICLES OF THE WBTS, ETC. EXPENSES ARE COST OF PRINTING AND POSTAGE AND TOTALLED $10,880. MOS&B HOLDS A NATIONAL CONVENTION EACH YEAR AT WHICH TIME RECOGNITION AND SERVICE AWARDS ARE MADE TO THOSE MEMBERS IDENTIFIED BY THEIR CHAPTERS, STATE SOCIETIES AND NATIONAL OFFICERS. IN 2019 THIS AMOUNT WAS $1,264. THE MOS&B INCURS NATIONAL OPERATION EXPENSES INCLUDING PRINTING, POSTAGE, OFFICE SUPPLIES, TOLL-FREE NATIONAL TELEPHONE NUMBER, ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION, LIABILITY INSURANCE FOR THE OFFICERS AND BOARD OF DIRECTORS, AND ANNUAL CPA ACCOUNTING SERVICES. IN 2019 THESE EXPENSES TOTALLED $20,769.
