Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF NAMI NORTH CAROLINA IS TO PROMOTE RECOVERY AND OPTIMIZE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR THOSE LIVING WITH MENTAL ILLNESS.

IN A SYSTEM THAT DOES NOT ALWAYS MEET DEMAND, NAMI'S FREE CLASSES, SUPPORT GROUPS, AND PRESENTATIONS OFFER ESSENTIAL SUPPORT TO INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES WHO STRUGGLE WITH THE DEVASTATING EFFECTS OF MENTAL ILLNESS. AT THE STATE LEVEL, NAMI NC PROVIDES PUBLIC EDUCATION WORKSHOPS, WEBINARS ON SPECIFIC ISSUES, AND FREE PROGRAM LEADER TRAININGS. DURING FISCAL YEAR 2020, NAMI NC DELIVERED ONLINE VERSIONS OF NAMI PROGRAMS TO BE SAFE AND COMPLIANT WITH HEALTH GUIDELINES REGARDING COVID-19.DURING FISCAL YEAR 2020 NAMI NC TRAINED 97 GROUP FACILITATORS, TEACHERS, AND PRESENTERS. THESE VOLUNTEERS FROM ACROSS THE STATE LEARNED NEW TECHNOLOGY TO BRING NAMI'S PROVEN CLASSES AND GROUPS TO COMMUNITIES, WHILE MAINTAINING CONFIDENTIALITY. ALL TOLD, NAMI AFFILIATES PROVIDED OVER 3,000 EXPERIENCES OF NAMI PROGRAMMING INCLUDING SUPPORT GROUPS, CLASSES, AND PRESENTATIONS.EACH YEAR THE NAMI NC HELPLINE SERVES HUNDREDS OF NC RESIDENTS SEEKING WARM SUPPORT, INFORMATION, AND REFERRALS. DURING FISCAL YEAR 2020 THE TEAM RECEIVED 2,132 CALLS AND MESSAGES, REPRESENTING AN INCREASE OF 73% OVER THE PREVIOUS YEAR. MOST REACH OUT VIA PHONE, WHILE OTHERS CONTACT US VIA EMAIL, SOCIAL MEDIA, AND TEXT. DURING THE LAST QUARTER OF 2019-20, OVER THREE- FOURTHS OF THE CALLS WERE COVID-19 RELATED.STUDIES SHOW THAT MANY LIVING WITH MENTAL ILLNESS NEED HELP TO FEEL INCLUDED IN THE COMMUNITY. LACK OF INCLUSION CONTRIBUTES TO FEELINGS OF ISOLATION AND HAMPERS RECOVERY. IN 2019 NAMI NC RESPONDED TO A CHALLENGE FROM THE NC DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES. THEY ASKED US TO FOCUS ON HOW INDIVIDUALS WITH MENTAL ILLNESS CAN FIND NATURAL SUPPORTS TO BRING THEM INTO THE LARGER COMMUNITY. NAMI NC TRAINED 13 LOCAL NAMI GROUPS ON HOW TO BECOME CI CHAMPIONS. AFTERWARD THEY RECEIVED GRANTS FUNDED BY NCDHHS THROUGH THE FEDERAL SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES ADMINISTRATION, RESULTING IN FIVE LOCAL PROJECTS. CI GRANTS PAID FOR EMOTIONAL SUPPORT DOG ADOPTIONS FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS IN BURKE COUNTY. IN ASHE COUNTY, EVENTS INCLUDED RECOVERY-FOCUSED BOOK DISCUSSIONS WITH THE AUTHORS PRESENT. OTHER GROUPS ORGANIZED WELLNESS CLASSES, COOKING CLASSES, AND COMMUNITY TALENT/FASHION SHOWS.AS THE PANDEMIC STRUCK AND PEOPLE WERE CONFINED TO THEIR HOMES IN THE SPRING OF 2020, NAMI NC DEVELOPED A WEEKLY WEBINAR CALLED THURSDAYS WITH NAMI. ITS PURPOSE IS TO BUILD CONVERSATIONS AND BUILD COMMUNITY AROUND THE TOPIC OF MENTAL HEALTH. DURING APRIL, MAY, AND JUNE THERE WERE 12 PROGRAMS ATTRACTING A TOTAL OF 238 PARTICIPANTS. MANY SPEAKERS SHARED PERSONAL STORIES; GENERAL TOPICS INCLUDED BIPOLAR DISORDER, SUBSTANCE USE, AND PSYCHIATRIC ADVANCE DIRECTIVES. OUR JUNE 4 PROGRAM, WHICH FOLLOWED THE MAY 25 DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD, FOCUSED ON RACISM AND MENTAL HEALTH.
