Organizations Filed Purposes: TO ENHANCE HEALTH CARE DELIVERED TO THE PEOPLE OF NORTH CAROLINA BY SUPPORTING THE GOALS AND PROJECTS OF THE NORTH CAROLINA ACADEMY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS AS ITS PHILANTHROPIC ARM.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES - STUDENT INTEREST INITIATIVES ARE DESIGNED TO FOSTER MEDICAL STUDENT INTEREST IN THE SPECIALTY OF FAMILY MEDICINE. THESE PROGRAMS PROVIDE INFORMATION AND EXPERIENCES IN THE FIELD OF FAMILY MEDICINE TO STUDENTS EARLY IN THEIR EDUCATION. IT AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO MEDICAL STUDENTS, WHICH CONVERT TO LOANS IN THE EVENT THE STUDENT DOES NOT SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE A FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM. IT ALSO PROVIDES CLINICAL EXPERIENCES (FOUR-WEEK AND TWO-WEEK EXPERIENCES) TO MEDICAL STUDENTS ACROSS THE STATE. THESE SUMMER PROGRAMS PAID STIPENDS TO STUDENTS AND PRECEPTORS AS WELL AS COVERED DIRECT PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION COSTS, TOTALING $22,385.THE FOUNDATION CONTINUED INVOLVEMENT WITH FAMILY MEDICINE INTEREST GROUPS ON EACH MEDICAL SCHOOL CAMPUS AND CONTRIBUTED APPROXIMATELY $36,000 TO THESE INTEREST GROUPS AND/OR DIRECTLY TO THEIR ENROLLED MEDICAL STUDENTS. THIS INCLUDED SUPPORT FOR EVENTS HELD ON CAMPUS AS WELL AS TRAVEL STIPENDS FOR STUDENTS TO ATTEND STATE AND NATIONAL LEVEL CONFERENCES. FINALLY, THE FOUNDATION PROVIDED $30,500 IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO FIVE MEDICAL STUDENTS AND SIX PHYSICIANS COMPLETING THE SCHOLARS PROGRAM.

EDUCATION AND RESEARCH - THIS PROGRAM FUNDS APPROVED RESEARCH PROJECTS, WITH PRIORITY GIVEN TO QUALITY IMPROVEMENT ACTIVITIES.

RURAL HEALTH PROGRAM - THE PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT IS TO EXPOSE MEDICAL STUDENTS TO PRIMARY CARE IN RURAL AREAS EARLY IN THEIR EDUCATION IN ORDER TO INCREASE THE LIKELIHOOD THAT THESE STUDENTS WILL CONSIDER TRAINING/PRACTICING IN AREAS OF NEED IN THE FUTURE. IT INVOLVED SELECTING TEN RISING SECOND YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN A TWO WEEK WESTERN RURAL HEALTH PROGRAM IN 2018, WITH CONTINUED FUNDING AND SUPPORT THROUGH DECEMBER 2019.
