The Foundation's mission is to eliminate preventable infant death and illness in N.C. To do this, we focus on improving the health of women of childbearing age and supporting new parents. We provide statewide leadership for reducing sleep-related infant deaths. Programs build the capacity of community-based organizations working with families and make information and resources available to the public.
NC GSK FOUNDATION: THE AGENCY'S FY 15-16 INCLUDED THE SECOND HALF OF YEAR THREE OF A THREE YEAR GRANT FROM THE NC GLAXOSMITHKLINE FOUNDATION. THE PURPOSE OF THE GRANT WAS "TO PROVIDE BRIDGE FUNDING TO SUPPORT THE NORTH CAROLINA HEALTHY START FOUNDATION IN ITS CONTINUING OPERATION." THESE FUNDS PROVIDE CRITICAL SUPPORT FOR AGENCY PERSONNEL, OPERATIONS, PROGRAMS AND DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES WHILE THE AGENCY ASSESSES AND REDEFINES ITS LEADERSHIP ROLE IN REDUCING THE STATE'S INFANT MORTALITY RATE, AND IMPLEMENTS A PLAN TO DIVERSIFY REVENUE SOURCES. FY 15-16 MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS: - MAINTENANCE OF CRITICAL STAFF POSITIONS, INFRASTRUCTURE, PROGRAMS AND ORGANIZATIONAL CREDIBILITY DURING A TRANSITIONAL PERIOD. - IMPLEMENTED A DEVELOPMENT PLAN STARTED EARLIER RAISING FUNDS FROM INDIVIDUAL DONORS AND SMALL BUSINESSES. (NC GSK FOUNDATION -- CONT.) - CONTINUED TO PROVIDE LEADERSHIP FOR THE STATEWIDE INFANT SAFE SLEEP PROGRAM. THE BOARD'S GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE RECOMMENDED POLICIES AND PROCESSES TO THE FULL BOARD AND CONTINUED TOO INCREASE BOARD GOVERNANCE EFFECTIVENESS. - INCREASED BOARD COMPETENCE BY INTEGRATING EDUCATIONAL "MISSION MOMENTS" IN ALL BOARD MEETINGS THROUGH PRESENTATION OF PROGRAM UPDATES AND NEW RESEARCH. - EFFECTIVELY USED SOCIAL MEDIA AND EXPANDED OUR ELECTRONIC NETWORK. - MAINTAINED A HIGH LEVEL OF VISIBILITY THROUGH PUBLIC SPEAKING, SERVING ON STATEWIDE PLANNING/ADVISORY GROUPS AND COMMITTEES.
YOUNG FAMILIES CONNECT: FY 15-16 SPANNED THE END OF YEAR 2 AND MOST OF YEAR 3 OF A FOUR YEAR FEDERAL GRANT TO NC (YOUNG FAMILIES CONNECT) TO SUPPORT PREGNANT AND PARENTING WOMEN AND MEN, AGES 13-24, IN FOUR DESIGNATED NC COUNTIES. THROUGH A CONTRACT WITH THE NC DIVISION OF PUBLIC HEALTH, THE FOUNDATION EDUCATED, SUPPORTED AND LINKED THIS AUDIENCE TO INFORMATION AND RESOURCES THROUGH AVENUES SUCH AS THE PROJECT'S RESPONSIVE WEBSITE (YOUNGFAMILIESCONNECT.ORG ALSO INCLUDES MOBILE SITE), FACEBOOK, I
