MOHA 990 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: THE NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF HISTORY ASSOCIATES (MOHA) PROVIDES DIRECT SUPPORT TO THE NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF HISTORY AS ITS FRIENDS GROUP. MOHA SUPPORTS THE MUSEUM'S AWARD-WINNING EXHIBITIONS, OUTSTANDING EDUCATIONAL AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS, AND THE ACQUISITION OF ARTIFACTS IMPORTANT TO NORTH CAROLINA'S HISTORY. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO HELPS FUND FOUR FESTIVALS AND THE MUSEUM'S DOCENT PROGRAM ALONG WITH THE MULTIPLE PROGRAMS IT SUPPORTS IN THE MUSEUM THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. LAST YEAR, MOHA'S SUPPORT OF THE MUSEUM RESULTED IN THE FOLLOWING ACCOMPLISHMENTS: NINE EXTRAORDINARY EXHIBITIONS INCLUDING TOY BOOM WHICH WAS COMPLETELY FUNDED BY MOHA. OTHER EXHIBITIONS WE SUPPORTED INCLUDED ONE GIANT LEAP, QUILTSPEAK, REMEMBERING D-DAY, FREEDOM A PROMISE DISRUPTED, AND THE GREEN BOOK. 6,297 STUDENTS IN 44 NORTH CAROLINA COUNTIES RECEIVED TRAVEL GRANTS TO TRAVEL TO THE MUSEUM AND ITS SURROUNDING HISTORIC AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES. 10,802 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE TAR HEEL JUNIOR HISTORIAN PROGRAM, A HISTORY "CLUB" FOR STUDENTS TO TAKE A DEEPER DIVE INTO THE PAST, CREATE PROJECTS AROUND THEIR HISTORIC FOCAL POINT, AND COMPETE IN AN ANNUAL CONVENTION WHERE SEVERAL WINNERS IN DIFFERENT CATEGORIES HAVE THEIR WORK ON DISPLAY IN THE TAR HEEL JUNIOR GALLERY FOR A YEAR. THIS IS THE LARGEST NUMBER OF PARTICIPANT IN THE THJH'S HISTORY. 9,259 VISITORS ATTENDED THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL CELEBRATION, AN ANNUAL EVENT FILLED WITH MUSIC, DANCE, ART, FOOD, AND HANDS-ON LEARNING IN CELEBRATION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY. 5,166 HOURS GIVEN BY 93 VOLUNTEERS AND DOCENTS. DOCENTS WORK DIRECTLY WITH SCHOOL GROUPS AND VISITORS TO FURTHER EXPLAIN ARTIFACTS FOUND IN THE GALLERIES AND ALLOW HANDS-ON EXPLORATION WITH ARTIFACT REPRODUCTIONS AT EDUCATIONAL CARTS FOUND THROUGHOUT THE MUSEUM. 12,364 VISITORS AND STUDENTS ATTENDED THE AMERICAN INDIAN HERITAGE CELEBRATION. THE EVENT BEGINS ON A FRIDAY FOR A FULL DAY OF EDUCATION FOR SCHOOL GROUPS WHO CAN ENGAGE DIRECTLY WITH MEMBERS AND ARTISTS FROM NORTH CAROLINA'S EIGHT RECOGNIZED TRIBES. THE SECOND DAY OF THE EVENT IS A COMMUNITY-WIDE CELEBRATION FILLED WITH DANCING, MUSIC, ART, AND MORE. 68,261 STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS ENGAGED WITH LIVE STREAMING AND DIGITAL DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMS. 56,287 STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS CONNECTED WITH HISTORY THROUGH THE MUSEUM'S HISTORY-IN-A-BOX KITS. THESE KITS ARE FILLED WITH REPLICA ARTIFACTS, EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES AND CURRICULUM SUPPORT TOOLS TO BRING HISTORY TO LIFE IN THE CLASSROOM. IT ALSO OFFERS THE OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS AND SCHOOLS WHO CANNOT TRAVEL TO THE MUSEUM TO ENGAGE WITH HISTORY IN A TANGIBLE WAY. 76,330 STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS VISITED THE MUSEUM. 147,698 STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS ENGAGE WITH THE MUSEUM'S EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES. 12,364 STUDENTS AND VISITORS ATTENDED THE ONE GIANT LEAP FESTIVAL MARKING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOON LANDING AND CELEBRATING THE MUSEUM'S EXHIBITION ON THE LANDING. 465,760 TOTAL VISITORS TO THE MUSEUM OVER THE COURSE OF THE 2019-20 FISCAL YEAR.

MUSEUM DAYS EVENTS CELEBRATING LOCAL NC HISTORY WERE HELD ACROSS THE STATE IN FIVE HISTORICAL LOCATIONS IN 2019-2020: BLOWING ROCK, NC, NAGS HEAD, NC, MACON, NC, RALEIGH, NC AND WINSTON-SALEM, NC. 475 PEOPLE ATTENDED THESE EVENTS, RESULTING IN 81 NEW ASSOCIATES MEMBERSHIPS. SEVERAL OTHER ORGANIZATIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL MEETINGS OF THE MEMBERS WERE ALSO HELD IN 2019-2020.

VISITOR SERVICES, BOOKS, MAPS AND EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS, EXHIBIT INFORMATION, REPLICAS OF ARTIFACTS, NORTH CAROLINA: AN APPETIZING STATE COOKBOOK AND OTHER OFFERINGS WERE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND VISITORS AT THE MUSEUM.
