THE COUNCIL SUPPORTS AND PROMOTES THE WORK OF GO GLOBAL NC. THE MISSION OF GO GLOBAL NC IS CONNECTING NORTH CAROLINA AND THE WORLD THROUGH PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO BUILD THE CAPACITY OF POLICY LEADERS, EDUCATORS, STUDENTS, AND BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS TO ENABLE NORTH CAROLINA TO SUCCEED IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY AND INCREASINGLY INTERDEPENDENT WORLD.
CHINA PROGRAMS: THE COUNCIL SUPPORTED THE WORK OF THE CHINA PROGRAMS. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PROGRAMS INCLUDE: SUPPORTING 20 GUEST TEACHERS TEACHING MANDARIN CHINESE IN 38 SCHOOLS IN NORTH CAROLINA, RESULTING IN APPROXIMATELY 9,500 STUDENTS LEARNING CHINESE DURING THE 2018-19 ACADEMIC YEAR; SUPPORTING THE PERSONAL AND PROFESSION ACCLIMATION OF THE GUEST TEACHERS TO NORTH CAROLINA THROUGH WORKSHOPS, CLASSROOM OBSERVATIONS AND FEEDBACK, AND GENERAL SUPPORT; OFFERING YCT/HSK PROFICIENCY TESTING TO STUDENTS TAKING MANDARIN CHINESE (APPROXIMATELY 272 STUDENTS TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THIS OPPORTUNITY); ENGAGING 20 STUDENTS FROM NORTH CAROLINA AND 20 STUDENTS FROM BEIJING IN A VIRTUAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM; LEADING A DELEGATION OF SEVEN NORTH CAROLINA EDUCATORS ON AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM IN CHINA; AND LEADING A DELEGATION OF EDUCATION ADMINISTRATORS TO CHINA TO PARTICIPATE IN AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TEACHING CHINESE LANGUAGE.
LATINO INITIATIVE: THE COUNCIL SUPPORTED THE WORK OF THE LATINO INITIATIVE PROGRAM WHICH CONNECTS NORTH CAROLINA GOVERNMENT AND COMMUNITY LEADERS THROUGH DEVELOPING RELATIONSHIPS AND STRATEGIES TO POSITIVELY INTEGRATE THE LATINO COMMUNITY INTO THE FABRIC OF THEIR NEW NORTH CAROLINA COMMUNITIES. IN AUGUST 2018, SIXTEEN LAW ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM ALUMNI FROM ACROSS NORTH CAROLINA RETURNED TO GUANAJUATO, MEXICO TO GAIN FURTHER UNDERSTANDING OF THE MEXICAN CULTURE IN ORDER TO BE MORE INTENTIONAL WHILE SERVING THIS COMMUNITY IN NC; TO FURTHER THEIR UNDERSTANDING ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN LAW ENFORCEMENT AND COMMUNITIES IN MEXICO; TO EXPAND RESOURCES AND APPROACHES FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT TO ENGAGE WITH THEIR COMMUNITIES; AND TO FOSTER BINATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH COUNTERPARTS IN MEXICO FOR FUTURE COLLABORATION AND CULTURAL EXCHANGES. IN SPRING 2019, A DELEGATION OF SEVENTEEN LAW ENFORCEMENT PROFESSIONALS FROM GUANAJUATO, MEXICO TRAVELED TO CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA TO CONTINUE THE BILATERAL COMMUNICATION AND CROSS-TRAINING PROGRAM. IN FALL 2018, A DELEGATION OF SIXTEEN LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS TRAVELED TO MEXICO TO GAIN A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF MEXICAN HISTORY, CULTURE, LAW ENFORCEMENT, AND THE PUSH-PULL FACTORS OF IMMIGRATION THAT IMPACT THEIR LATIN/HISPANIC CONSTITUENTS IN NC. THE DELEGATION EXPERIENCED BOTH URBAN AND RURAL MEXICO AND MADE CONNECTIONS WITH THEIR LAW ENFORCEMENT COUNTERPARTS IN MEXICO, RETURNING WITH IDEAS FOR IMPROVING COMMUNITY RELATIONS AT HOME. THE PROGRAM INCLUDED AN ORIENTATION; A SEVEN DAY PROGRAM IN-COUNTRY; A FOLLOW-UP WORKSHOP; AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A PROJECT IN THE COMMUNITY AT HOME. IN NOVEMBER 2018, A DELEGATION OF THIRTEEN EDUCATORS, ELECTED OFFICIALS, ECONOMIC DEVELOPERS, AND NON-PROFIT REPRESENTATIVES TRAVELED TO MEXICO TO GAIN A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF MEXICAN, HISTORY, CULTURE, AND EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT. UPON THEIR RETURN TO NORTH CAROLINA, THE DELEGATION DEVELOPED ACTION PLANS FOR IMPROVING RELATIONSHIPS AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT IN NORTH CAROLINA. THE PROGRAM INCLUDED AN ORIENTATION; A SEVEN DAY PROGRAM IN-COUNTRY; A FOLLOW- UP WORKSHOP; AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A PROJECT IN THE COMMUNITY AT HOME. IN SPRING 2019, A DELEGATION OF BOARD MEMBERS OF THE LATINO CREDIT UNION TRAVELED TO GUADALAJARA AND GUANAJUATO, MEXICO TO GAIN A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF MEXICAN HISTORY, CULTURE, AND THE PUSH-PULL FACTORS OF IMMIGRATION THAT IMPACT THEIR LATIN/HISPANIC CONSTITUENTS IN NC.
GLOBAL TEACHERS: THE COUNCIL SUPPORTED THE WORK OF GO GLOBAL NC IN IMPLEMENTING A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR 42 EDUCATORS IN THE 2018-19 FISCAL YEAR. FORTY-ONE (41) TEACHERS AND ONE PRINCIPAL TRAVELED TO MEXICO IN JUNE 2019, PARTICIPATING IN A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM DESIGNED TO HELP PARTICIPANTS LEARN MORE ABOUT MEXICO'S HISTORY, CULTURE AND EDUCATION SYSTEM; GAIN INSIGHT INTO THE IMPACT OF CULTURAL FACTORS OF STUDENT LEARNING AND ACHIEVEMENT; LEARN ABOUT WATER CONSERVATION EFFORTS UNDERWAY TO PROTECT MEXICO CITY'S DRINKING WATER SUPPLY; EXPLORE GLOBAL CHALLENGES WITH IMPLICATIONS FOR BOTH MEXICO AND NORTH CAROLINA; AND TO COLLABORATE WITH EACH OTHER TO IMPLEMENT LEARNINGS INTO THE CLASSROOM. THE PROGRAM INCLUDED AN ORIENTATION IN NORTH CAROLINA, A 14 DAY PROGRAM IN MEXICO; AND A FOLLOW-UP WORKSHOP TO REFLECT ON LESSONS LEARNED AND SHARE CURRICULUM UNITS/PROJECTS DESIGNED TO SHARE LEARNINGS WITH STUDENTS.
